First Dictation

For a little background most of the spelling words my 8yo ds did in 1st (other curriculum) and 2nd grades and the first four months of this school year (HOD). He could spell them fairly well and he was bored with the same words, so I decided to try him on the dictation passages in his guide (Bigger ...

Re: Dictation formatting question

The phrases/sentences are the actual dictation passage. The words underneath are describe in the instructions by the following: " Extension words are listed under some passages to dictate to students who are ready for more of a challenge." I could be wrong, but if that is all the words are, it seems...

Re: Phonics?

Thank you ladies for this post and the suggestions. It confirms for me to continue with R&S and the ER's, and also to try ETC for my ds who is struggling with some phonics. It was only after the fact, that I discovered what we used for K & 1st wasn't complete phonics instruction, although it seemed ...

Re: What is one scheduling tip that has helped your school d

For me the hardest thing to do, but also the most helpful was realizing that we didn't have to be done before lunch. In fact right afterward, is when my children are more ready for storytime and crafts. So after reading Julie's post on scheduling :D I changed our Schedule to an hour after lunch for ...

Re: So helpful, have to share

Thanks for sharing this. I had a pantry shelf that I devoted to a few thing for my 8 yo to fix, but this is so much better.

Re: One or two programs?

Hi Sarah! Welcome to the board. Preparing Hearts does have an extension package for 5th-6th graders. That being said, I know others can help you out more in placement that have done that before. One thing to get in mind is that placement involves more than reading levels, but a lot of other skills b...

Re: What is one area in which you've seen growth or progress

I have seen where my 8yo son could not do written work in Beyond, to being able to do copywork in Bigger Hearts. This year he is also able to narrate back to me and do a fair job. The other thing is that he is begging for more History/Science/Storytime readings! So, you see, I couldn't just choose o...

Re: Weekly Review: November 12-16

Our review is actually for Nov 13- 20th (today). Last week we had a sick 3yo who needed a lot of attention, so we worked 2 days this week. In Bigger Hearts we got more done that I had thought. We went from Unit 11, day 4 - Unit 12, Day 4 Learning through History side. The last part was because my so...

Re: As we move into high school, the design of the guides...

Thank you is not adequate to say for all that goes into the guides. I knew it was a lot of hard work, but I never imagined you having to give up your family time and Sundays for us! I hate that it has to happen for a guide to be written. You are laying aside your 'direct' mothering/teaching for some...

Re: Examples of Schedules with 4 Guides?

I can't tell you what to do with scheduling since I've not been there. But one big thing to do that I speak with great experience on is . . . You have to have some intense training time with your youngest. Our 3 yo has a tendency to be wild if given an opportunity, but we reign her in. Easier said t...

Re: Mismatched book and guide

What is the copyrights for the book and guide? My guide says updated 2010 and for unit 7, day 4 does not reference Stories of the Pilgrims. It says to place a cookie sheets at angle down several steps and roll a 'barrel' up the ramp. KEY IDEA: the Pilgrims worked hard to load the boat with supplies ...

Re: Back to HOD this yr - just need help w/ thoughts

Just watch and observe this year to see how it goes and if the twins are not ready to go up you could do the left side of Beyond along with the right side of Bigger. As the year progresses you will be better able to determine their needs. BTW, welcome back to HOD! I am glad it is going so well for y...
