Re: Experiences with NCAA?

Yes, that is part of it, but it’s not entirely accurate. He’s been a part of travel teams before. We’ve found elite teams sometimes aren’t worth the cost and/or hype. We’ve had to exercise some wisdom about it. It’s easy for parents to go broke trying to make it happen, so we’ve had to drawn the lin...

Re: Experiences with NCAA?

Yes,it should be no different, but the competition is fierce. If wasn’t for HSLDA interfering, most homeschooled students would not have a chance to play sports at the college level. Since 2008, the NCAA has a homeschool department. Athletes go under more scrutiny because in addition of meeting the ...

Re: Experiences with NCAA?

I think you are right! I’ve always thought HOD to be very rigorous and matches what most selective colleges want. We are seeing a few problems ahead, though. When I listed all his subjects by grade, NCAA may not approve his history, world geography, world religion, etc because it doesn’t have a text...

Experiences with NCAA?

My son hopes to play baseball in college. NCAA evaluates homeschool course-work on a case by case to determine eligibility. They do not give a list of approved curriculum and they do not pre-approve courses ahead of time for homeschoolers. They’ll evaluate his coursework at 11th grade. We’re happy w...

Re: Foreign Language

Hi Karla! That’s an unexpected surprise! Glad I posted! I am from Brazil. You? Please, if you come up with anything else, please share. I like what I see so far in the MIT open course for Portuguese. My goal is to finish Rosetta Stone and Duolingo before fall 2016. They will talk with my parents via...

Re: Foreign Language

They are not dual citizens, neither am I. I could have requested up to the age of 12, but I didn’t. Since I don’t want to ask for my daughter and not for him, I probably won’t. It was a lot of paperwork and fees involved.... Its not hard for Americans to obtain a visa to go to Brazil.

Re: Foreign Language

Thanks, StephanieU! We’re using those right now. I ran into trouble verifying equivalency of the material with my own high school transcript when I moved to the US. I found a Portuguese class @ MIT Open courses that I think it will work.

Foreign Language

Portuguese is my first language. Since my husband doesn’t speak Portuguese, we only speak English at home. I regret this decision. They still want to learn. It’s just harder now because whenever they don’t understand, they speak to me in English. Looking forward to High School years, I’d like for Po...

Re: Struggling Speller

Correct me if I am wrong, but I see your son is 8. If so, I’d like to encourage you that he’s still very young and it takes time. AAS is good foundational program! I used until level 3 with my kids. While they are older now, I have seen he most improvement with Spelling Zoo from IEW. It’s visual, au...

Re: What should we not miss in RevtoRev and MtMM?

I struggled over this decision with my son too. We decided to skip and go from RTR to MtMMs. After much deliberating and praying, I realized that I was going to either skip at a guide either in middle school or high school. The final decision was after making sure he fit in the placement guide. He w...

Re: "just a little more" takes lots of time

I struggle in wanting to be at certain unit in the guide, especially at this time of the year that summer is so close. I know that I am not alone. As much as I would like to take my time with each guide and not care at all when I finish, I do. I’ll have an 8th grader in the fall and High School, oh ...

Re: "just a little more" takes lots of time

Edited: I struggle in wanting to be a at certain unit in the guide, especially at this time of the year that summer is so close. I mentioned the workbox system because it is helping so I don’t feel tempted to double up. Of course, it’s not necessary and there are many other ways to keep organized. W...
