Re: Bored with Reb and the Redcoats

Thanks for the responses. I am still reading aloud to my son because I have heard many "experts" (ie-Andrew Pudewa) say that you should keep reading aloud to your kids--even in their teens--and also because I think there is an important connection that occurs when we read aloud to our kids and I wa...

Re: Extra Set of Books for Avid Reader (Preparing)

I would get the extension package for Preparing. None of them are too mature (the maturity content for extensions will be an issue with CTC on up). My daughter had listened in on "Raiders from the Sea" when I had read it with DS and could remember it quite well, so we read Adam of the Road together....

Re: Mystery of History

I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking here. The entire book of MOH vol 3 is read in Resurrection to Reformation. My son really loved that book and asked me to buy Volume 4 for him to read on his own. The Student Notebooks are very specific to the guides. You would not be able to make other bo...

Re: Ideas on Creating a HOD COOP Experience

I think it would be too hard to do a co-op based on a specific curriculum. I have a co-op with 4 other moms. Every single one of us is using something different with our kids. We all share a common faith, though, and that makes all the difference. We do a field trip, presentation day, lego club, and...

Re: About to give up, and send to PS

I've been re-reading Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Terri Maxwell. I highly recommend it, it is so encouraging. She specifically addresses this. I'll share a bit from the book: Begin by recalling how you were led to homeschool in the first place. Keep in mind that the Lord uses diffic...

Re: Shakespeare in Res 2 Rev

Yes! We had the same problem last year. I just paged back through the first half and it would trigger our memory. I think when I do it again with my daughter in a couple years that we'll make a few notes about each play to help us keep track of them all. The other thing that made it hard was how the...

Re: Helping Maintain Curriculum Through Daily Use

I have been covering all the edges of the covers with Scotch book tape and they have held up very well. My son's guide is kept on a cookbook stand open to the day's page and he doesn't carry it around with him much. I have heard of plenty of people who have their guides spiral bound or else put in a...

My son has used Teaching Textbooks 4-6 and is using pre-algebra this year for 7th grade. He's had great success with TT.

Re: RtoR Encouragement needed :)

I will say that I did read Shakespeare aloud to my son last year. In Unit 1, I thought the box was a "T" and I didn't realize it was actually an "I" until we were well over halfway through the year! We did have a good time doing that together and I was glad I did it since it made me familiar with th...

Re: "Boyhood and Beyond" Advise

As far as I know, 11 is young for a boy to start puberty and is uncommon so I don't think you have to worry quite yet. Boyhood and Beyond isn't about puberty at all, but about becoming a Godly man, so you don't have to start that one sooner at all. It is an absolutely wonderful book and I loved read...

Re: Problems with Medieval History Writing Lessons

I just wanted to say that my son sounds like yours, and we barely made it through the MHWL. We did it totally together, and I felt that the final drafts were sometimes as much my writing as his. The creative writing portions were sheer agony for both of us. I've always said that he has no imaginatio...

We also are in a co-op on Friday afternoons. In the mornings, we do Beautiful Feet Geography, Life of Fred math, and watch an episode of the Word Up Latin and Greek vocab dvd.

Re: Beyond question

My daughter just used a wide-ruled notebook. I would re-type the poem and cut it apart into 2-line segments and she would copy one segment each day into her notebook. I did increase it slowly over the year until she was copying 4 lines at a time.

Re: A Child's Geo. in CTC

I will say that A Child's Geography did bug me last year but DS liked it. He liked it so much that he was thrilled when he saw the book for RTR! Once he got to it in the guide, he asked me to read it to him because he so much enjoyed how I read the other volume.

I took a summer break with both Bigger and Beyond. It worked just fine, no problems at all.
