Re: highlight Scripture in CTC
We use erasable colored pencils for the highlighting. I did buy my daughter a new Bible just for this purpose. Actually, I buy a new one every year in a different translation, so that she will have a set for reference in the future.

Re: placement help: Preparing or Bigger?
I used Bigger with extensions for my 3rd/4th grader. It was perfect for her. There is not much original writing required, but there was plenty of meaty work and learning. Just the introduction to notebooking, with the drawing, formal science sheets, and copywork, was quite the learning experience. I...

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)
The word "indian," usually "American Indian," is still acceptable in the U. S., though "Native American" is used, as well. This is a difference between Canada and the U. S. I would explain it in that way. I really think all of this P. C. is crazy. I live in Indiana, and I would hope we aren't made t...

Re: Help with reducing fractions Singapore 4A
We don't use Singapore, but I used to teach math for elementary school teachers. Have you drawn out the problems? Make a rectangle that is 3x4 for example for the 3/12's problem. Color 3 squares (one column or row). And see if that helps explain why 3/12=1/4. If you have something like snap cubes, ...

I plan to use Carrie's plans only for notebooking, even though we have used the other Apologia books with their journals. We may use some lapbook components, which I purchased inexpensively, to supplement.

Re: Land Animals (CTC) help
It is on the updates page: http://www.heartofdakota.com/updates.php Apologia changed their website so the original link is broken. We are on our 3rd Apologia book (including their notebooking journals ), and I just gradually turned more and more over to my daughter until now, at age 10, she can do m...

Re: Struggling with Bigger extensions
My 3rd grader had no issues using the extensions; however, she had been through book pack 2 with DITHOR the previous school year and had been finished with the emerging readers for over a year. If it were me, I would not add them for any child who is not a strong reader. Instead of adding depth and ...

Re: After Cheerful Cursive?
The Draw and Write Through History books do have copywork in cursive which would continue the practice. Take a look at Currclick for copywork ebooks. I think I saw one somewhere (scholastic?) which used jokes and riddles. He may like that.

Re: College Prep: Christian worldview vs. secular universiti
I think HOD will be more preparation than most Christians kids get for attending college. My eldest graduated from a Christian school, and they did teach an Understanding the Times/Worldview course. He has managed quite well in college and pharmacy school, without losing his faith and making straigh...

Re: Concerned about The Reading Lesson
Our phonics program taught that there are 3 different "short" sounds to the letter 'a'. I felt the same way about the 100 Easy Lessons. I bought it once, and someone gave me a copy. I never could bring myself to try it. :? You may like the Spalding method better. However, I am sure Carrie's selectio...

Re: Library or Buy?
I buy them (usually used) so I can resell them without losing much money at all. We have a wonderful library system, and I totally did K4 with the library. That was back in the day when holds were unlimited. Now they limit it to just a few per card, so it is hard. Some books would be very hard to ge...

Frankly, I wasn't impressed by the book projects, so we did the other options.MelInKansas wrote:So did you use different book projects the second time through? I don't know that I want to repeat those, at least not until my next DD is ready for DITHR.

Re: DITHR - repeat 2/3 student book or move on?
We did the 2/3 book twice, once with Level 2 books in 2nd grade with Beyond (I helped her a lot!) and once with Level 3 books in 3rd grade with Bigger. We will do the Level 4/5 book with Level 4 books this year with Preparing. I know it is scheduled half speed, but I have a feeling my daughter will ...
