Thinking of MTMM in January
My 13 year old 8th grade son will finish Rev to Rev the first week in January. I am trying to figure out the rest of the year. My plan is to start the Geography guide for his ninth grade year starting in the fall of 2014. He will continue his current math, grammar, writing, and DITHOR through the re...

Discouraged Today
Today, I am discouraged. Back in August, I wrote how God was giving me another chance to homeschool our oldest, but that we would be moving from California to Texas in order to take care of my mother in law. We are on our fourth week with our oldest. His first day went okay, a little bit of struggle...

So Thankful! And How do you prevent burn out?
Last November, through lots of tears on my part, we placed our oldest in a private Christian school. In February, I attended a mom's conference where God revealed to me some of my mistakes and I also knew in my heart that our oldest was supposed to be at home learning. I knew that the decision would...

Suggestions please
This fall, my youngest two will be 5 and 4. Originally, I had thought about placing them in separate guides for next year, but now I'm not quite sure. I don't mind doing separate guides, but they have always been a pair, and I know they would enjoy doing a lot of school things together excluding mat...

Re: Summer Bridge Activities?
Ever since we started school, no two summers have been the same, and this year is no different. Here is what I am thinking for this year: Our oldest just started private Christian school after Thanksgiving (after a lot of prayer). He gets out mid June but doesn't return until after Labor Day. I will...

Re: Spelling Lists in Beyond
Carrie,
Thank you so much for your insight. I will continue with the lists given each week and not worry about practicing them until they are perfect during that one week. The perfectionist in me will learn to let it go. Thanks again!

Spelling Lists in Beyond
Our six year old has been enjoying Beyond this year and most things have come very easy for him except handwriting. Anyway, the spelling lists are starting to require effort on his part. What do you do when the words aren't quite mastered by day 4? I am thinking about just using that same list the f...

RtR half speed?
Our ds11 needs some time to focus on some character issues, and I'm wondering if taking RtR half speed would give me the time to focus more on his heart and character for a few months or the rest of the year depending on the improvement seen. My question is how would I go half speed with RtR? We hav...

Re: Struggling with teaching writing
Thank you so much for your suggestions! We haven't picked it back up since I posted here, so we will just finish this lesson and move on. I know he will appreciate it. Thanks for posting examples of your son's work. It's so nice to have a visual!

Re: Struggling with teaching writing
Julie, Thanks for your response. Currently, we are in Lesson 6. The first few lessons have gone pretty well I think. It didn't take him long to understand how to outline. We do have to work together after he has written his first draft to go back and make sure he adds the "dress-up" words and such. ...

Struggling with teaching writing
Our oldest son is 11. Currently, we are using Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons. I feel I am in over my head. I have always wondered if there would come a time in homeschooling where I would feel out of my league. I am at that point in writing. Writing was always one of my weak areas growing up...

Thank you, Mommy!
I just had to share how thankful I am that we are using HOD this year. Today, my oldest son (11) was working on his science (Unit 7 of RtR) creating the "volcano." We were finishing up Day 4 of Unit 7 today where he got to create the volcano erupting. He thought this was the greatest science experim...

Beyond Unit 7, Day 4 Science Question
We were in the middle of our science lesson in Beyond today - Unit 7, Day 4. It mentioned looking in Stories of the Pilgrims on p. 80 at a picture of men using a ramp to carry a cask onto the boat. We have the second edition of Stories of the Pilgrims, and I know we have to use the revised schedule ...

Re: Brainstorming Placement Options
Thanks for your sharing your thoughts. I probably shouldn't even think about it until the end of this year. Children at young ages grow so much in one year. We used LHFHG last year, and I'm pretty sure our 4 year old who will be 5 will be able to handle it. I will probably end up letting the younger...

What a great idea! I'm already thinking of all the places those shelves could be used in our home.
