Re: Roll Call - When are you all starting?
We started July 23rd with Beyond again. We shelved it last year after only 3 units because we needed to focus more on reading for 1st grade. Now we are excited to be back and starting it again. I'm due to have a new baby in September, so we'll be taking a month off at some point in the fall which is...

Re: Handwriting and Beyond?
We did ARFH A last year and skipped the copywork altogether. This year we are doing ARFH T because her print is beautiful now and she doesn't need B and is ready for cursive instruction, but we will also be doing all of the copywork this year. I plan on having her do the copywork in print until she ...

Re: Question about Beyond
We have a poetry notebook because in addition to what HOD recommends, I also print out a picture of the author. I tape that picture up on the wall next to a copy of the full poem, and we proceed with the activities. The copywork is done in a regular lined paper notebook which we tear out and add to ...

Re: Phonics Help
How long are you doing phonics? I use two different programs- Phonics Pathways as the main program and ETC as a supplement. Between the two programs, we don't spend more than 15 minutes on phonics per day. The author of PP suggests keeping the lessons short, and at first I wasn't sure if it was goin...

Re: Singapore Math Manipulatives?
We use dried pinto beans for counters and lego's to create base ten blocks. I think with any math program, you can make most manipulatives with things around your home. We are in 1A/B

Re: Help with number bonds in Singapore 1A?
I've found that while I like the idea of number bonds, they just confuse my daughter. I read on another forum that the bonds are just another method to help kids learn the facts, so we've basically gone back to just learning them like 4+5=9, 5+4=9, 9-4=5, 9-5=4 written that way instead of using the ...

Re: Singapore math
I hit a similar wall around that part in the curriculum. I too have the HIG's and am using them for extra ideas and teaching methodologies specific to SM. I've found that if my child seems to understand the lesson as taught from the TB and can do the WB activities, then we continue moving through th...

Re: Should I be concerned about the way dd reads?
I am so glad to see this thread. You have described my daughter(6, 1st grade), who reads very similar to yours. Reading is the one area where I worry because the couple of friends she hangs with read above grade level (one public school, one homeschooled), so I always feel like I need to play catch-...

Re: Sight Words
When we homeschooled our son I stuck strictly to phonics and I think it hurt him. He asked to go to school when he was 7/first grade and he was not on the level that they expected him to be for first grade. When I went to the first parent teacher conference the teacher told me that he struggled with...

Re: New Beyond Family and Bible References
Hi, We are using a NIV kids' study Bible for our memory verses. Are you trying to find the verse in the Bibles from the emerging reader's set? We only have The Early Reader's Bible, and there's no way to use it for scripture verses assigned in Beyond as it's meant to be used as a reader. At least th...

Re: singapore math drill question
I think I did see something for 1A/B on their website. I may get one in the future for harder stuff. I just have a notebook where I write down problems and then she does them. We also used legos and did drill that way. The concepts are simple enough right now that I can do that. When we get more com...

Re: singapore math drill question
Here's what I've found using Singapore for the first time in 1a/BLHFHG. The activities scheduled in HOD are similar to suggestions in the HIG. The HIG offers more ideas to help cement the basics. That being said, we are working at our own pace through Singapore. As soon as we hit number bonds, I qui...

Re: Newbie Question:Tests and Skill Mastery w HOD
I don't know what everyone else is doing, but I am doing spelling tests on Friday and creating my own math tests every other week using the skills learned in Singapore. My state requires some sort of evaluation proof in your yearly portfolio, so any sort of testing works. When it comes to reading co...

Re: organizing for Beyond...any help???
This has been so helpful! Thanks! So, here is what I'm thinking so far... A 3-ring binder with a copywork, history/geography (do they have any papers for geography ?), art, science, english, storytime...am I missing anything? Then I bought those composition journals at Wal-mart with the blank space...
