Re: Day 5 Ideas

We have used the day to catch up on anything we didn't get done & spend extra time on 1-2 subjects that my child is struggling with. If there is more time, I will sometimes have a particular learning or project based activity that I have come up with, or I allow my daughter to choose a project (usua...

Ahead in R&S english

My dd 10 is finishing up CTC as her 4th grade. She has always excelled in grammar and was complaining about R&S 4 being to easy at the beginning of the year. Her Iowa Basic Test came back with an NPR (National % Rank) of 99 for her ELA (English- Language Arts) TOTAL, so I figured that it was indeed ...

I've wondered this too for the main history reading, but she's also struggling with the independent history and science narrations which she does read on her own ... :?

narration challenges

My dd9 is currently on wk 23 of PHFHG and besides narration, she seems to be handling the workload and independence well. She has been through all the HOD guides from LHFHG on up. Even back then she struggled with narrating for the Burgess stories, but seemed to improve and did well in Beyond. Then ...

Re: Love HOD, but difficult making PHFHG work...

I guess my original post wasn't very clear...I'm not so concerned about the 'hours' as I am a consistent schedule. So, yes, we can find other educational things to do on the 5th day, but then the schedule is totally different than the rest of the week. A different schedule 1 day/wk makes it hard to ...

Re: Love HOD, but difficult making PHFHG work...

countrymom, thanks for the suggestion...it's good to know that other's have though about this to! I actually tried exactly what you suggested ... I would look at the things that throw you off schedule and put them on Friday. The written narration, science experiment, creative writing assignment on d...

Love HOD, but difficult making PHFHG work...

My dd 8 (9 in a few wks) has completed 6 wks of PHFHG & previously used HOD from LHFHG on. We both love this guide, but have had numerous challenges. Early on, she was seeming to procrastinate alot, so I completely re-did the schedule which helped. Now she tends to be more diligent in getting things...

Re: Do kids always start disliking school around 8-9 years o

...you just wrote about our issues almost word for word! My daughter is almost 9 & is on her 4th wk of PHFHG & like yours does her work, but when disscussing it the night before you can tell she's not excited about it (& though she doesn't complain during school, she definitely has begun procrastina...

proçrastnation or too hard?

My oldest has done LHFHG, Beyond, Bigger & started Preparing 3 wks ago. We are having a difficult time getting done each day & have ended up having to finish 5-6 boxes on Fridays! She does work slowly-somewhat of a perfectionist, but has done fine completing all the other guides in a timely fashion....

Dictation

My dd8 is 2nd grade & using Bigger. We used the 1st spelling list with Beyond last year. She LOVES spelling to the point that she requested continuing spelling over this past summer, which resulted in us finishing up the 2nd list about a month ago! We started right into dictation & she made 1 capita...

Re: Little Pilgrim's Progress ok for 7 yr.old?

Have you read Hinds Feet in High Places (illustrated & adapted for children)? It is an allegory similar to Pilgrim's Progress, but more geared to the younger ages. We are currently reading it out loud & my 5 & 8 y/o are very much enjoying it! It even has "Think about It" sections which have started ...

Re: Bigger History Readings

Thanks for the ideas & encouragement! From what you all have said we just need to give it more time. In the meanwhile we will use some of your suggestions like drawing or forming with clay during the readings, & trying to find 'extra' ,more exciting, readings about the characters & possibly letting ...

Bigger History Readings

My dd 7 (8 in Sept./ 2nd grade) is struggling with the history readings in Bigger (& honestly, I am too  ). We have just started week 5 & I having been hoping that it would get better as we went but, it seems the as though the struggles are getting worse. She comprehends it fairly well but is ...

My dd sounds alot like your dd...she ends up re-reading many of her books as we can't get her new books fast enough! Some of her favorite Christian books have been: A Hive of Busy Bees, Another Hive of Busy Bees, Wisdom & the Millers, On Yonder Mountain, Donkey Cart Kids, & An Adventist Girl s...

Re: Record-Keeping

Our state requires that we maintain attendance (hours/days) records. We are using Bigger this year & I did the same thing for Beyond last year. I wanted to keep each childs records with their own paperwork so I typed up a daily schedule that includes time allotments for each HOD box & total daily sc...
