Using guides out of order?

This is an odd question, I know, but we are currently using a classical curriculum that is on a three year cycle. I'd like to keep our course of study in line with this cycle. Next year, we're studying American HIstory. My daughter fits well into Revival to Revolution (or she will next year when we ...

Re: Ice Age and Noah's Ark?

Oh dear. I've read Genesis, and I've never seen anything about an Ice Age in it. You would think that that would be specifically mentioned after the flood. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but the more I read about AIG and Ken Ham, the less I like it/him. I'll have to look it over with my husband ...

Ice Age and Noah's Ark?

I'm researching titles for next year and I've read that Draw and Write through History states that the flood caused The Ice Age. I know nothing about The Ice Age, but this seems to be far-fetched to me. Can someone please clarify this for me?

Re: NC Homeschool Conference?

Aw, that's disappointing. I'm still debating whether or not to go. I've had a horrible month and I can't decide if that's cause to go and have a few days without the kids, or not go and save the much-needed money. :(

NC Homeschool Conference?

I know it's early, but I was wondering if HOD is going to be at the Winston-Salem homeschool conference this year. I'm debating on whether or not to go and this would probably sway my decision. Don't get me wrong, I love the conference, but I'm a little overwhelmed with the cost of curricula t...

Unit 15, Day 5 Map

If anyone needs a reference for the map of the Delaware River, this is what we used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Delawarerivermap.png

We labeled the states around it as well using another map and it worked really well.

Re: Excessive Taxation is Not Easy

It was very good. Also a good lesson on why this is a good exercise for older children who fit into Bigger.  I feel a little bad for turning her heartbreak into an example...

Excessive Taxation is Not Easy

We just did the exercise in Unit 13 of Bigger using mini marshmallows to explain why America went to war with England. For the fun activities, I usually include my five-year-old. After taxing the kids for different things, they had no marshmallows left. The five-year-old did a great job of demonstra...

Re: I came back

I have a nine year old in Bigger, and it's a very good fit. Most days, she opens the guide, sees what she needs to do, and gets to work.

Re: Give your opinion: Science in future guides

I like that idea. I'm sure you're already aware, but Apologia has some amazing Science books for older students. I'm wondering how you deal with the required Biology experiments, though.

Re: How do you teach a SM lesson in 3A and higher?

Sarah, we had the same problems with SM 3A and 3B. I'm not a very Mathematically-minded person. We've switched, but I'm still struggling to teach the concepts. I've found that Khan Academy is a great, great supplement. I'm considering going back to Singapore next year and using Khan to teach. It's a...

Re: Questioning Science for next year

Thank you for this solid, sound advice! I really appreciate all the time you've taken in these responses. Thank you. :D This makes me excited to try out the Science in Preparing! She enjoys doing that section on her own now, and we're supposed to be on page 9 in our John Audobon, but she's already i...

Re: Questioning Science for next year

Also, after reading a previous thread about whether or not this is complete, I want to make extra sure that I don't skip things. I don't know if that means using all the extension packages as well as the Science. I admit, these packages confuse me.

Questioning Science for next year

I'm sure this topic has been hammered into the ground, but I'm looking at my options for next year with Preparing. We are on a very strict budget and I already have an Apologia Science book that I'm considering using. My question is, if I use my own separate Science, other than HOD, what will I be m...
