written narr in Preparing
Yesterday was written narration day in Preparing with my guy that is a great oral narrator but struggles with writing things down. It had already been a full day of writing and he was pretty exhausted from it. It was unit 4 where she begins having them write a sentence after just a couple of questio...

Re: example of poor thinking skills
Thanks for checking in. I did take her for testing. She did well . She's about 7th grade overall, 4th in math. Has no issues with memory or attention. She does have visual spatial skills issues. She can think pretty well only on one track--throwing other things into the mix is difficult for her. (it...

? about some of the DITHR choices
I'm confused about a couple of the choices for DITHR in the book packs. Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this. I'm trying to pick the next few books for my girls. I need a 4/5 book and a 6/7 book. For 4/5 nonfiction, it is Naya Nuki. I have had that books for years and one of my older daughte...

Re: Preparing & CTC Box Times
It is very helpful. I refer to that a bunch. We are full speed on Preparing right now, but our times are way longer so far because it's a struggle to read and write. He is getting faster though!

I don't know how to post links. But, go to the Main Board and just a little way down is a thread called Let's Share Our Schedules. It's on page 10 of that thread.

Thanks---but we have gone over those rules 4 million times--I am a broken record. He can't remember any of them.

11 yo can only spell a few words
Okay! I have read many times that people just follow the directions for the two spelling lists and then move into dictation. Even if they still miss some words each week, just keep plugging along. I have tried to be on board with that and think it will soon 'click' and he will get some. My son is re...

Re: 5A Home Instructor's Guide
Thanks Julie! I'll wait then. Nealewill, I sure hope that's the experience here as well. 4A and B have been tough for her. She went to a math tutoring place for about 6 months (we had to stop now for financial reasons) but it really helped solidify some concepts she wasn't getting. When you get 1 ho...

Re: 5A Home Instructor's Guide
There are many times that I'm explaining something to her, she doesn't get it. I explain it a different way, or add in some other details, doesn't get it. I want to throw up my hands and say, "there is no other way to explain it!!I don't get how you don't get it, what else can I say!!"---of course, ...

5A Home Instructor's Guide
To get or not to get? It's for my 13yo just about to finish 4B. She has always struggled with math, hence why we are in 4 still.

Re: Is this a good plan? Beyond vs. Bigger
I can relate to you with your guy that doesn't like to write. My 11 yo thinks it's the worst torture ever--well, he did, now it only ranks as maybe the 2nd worst torture. :) It is slowly getting better and better over time. I think it sounds like Bigger would be a good fit. His writing can catch up....

Re: 1/3 Rod and Staff English Question
I tend to go too easy on my son in writing also. From the beginning I should've been better about having him write the one sentence in the story time box or making sure we did the copywork in the poems from those earlier guides. He would complain or take forever doing it just many times I wouldn't e...

Re: Thank You HOD
Thanks Daneale for this post. It is very encouraging to see how far your children have come as I too have some children who are struggling. I see them improving greatly also because of HOD, but sometimes I can look ahead and think they will never be able to do it, or the progress seems too slow. I c...

Re: Combining for Electives only in High School
Haha, 8arrows, you are so funny! We love to have different ideas flowing out there! I love that you are willing to come from the other side. :) I would tend to agree with most of the others, that it will interrupt the flow. Things working together is such a great benefit of the curriculum. Also, by ...

Re: 1/3 Rod and Staff English Question
It all depends on the day and child for me. For my 11 yo in grade 4 R&S, I typically have him write no more than 5 sentences, for example. If there has been a big writing day already, or he is just already starting to get burned out on school, we do it orally or I help him write it. Yesterday, it wa...
