Re: Preparing question and looking for Catholics

Why not plan to work on Preparing only the days you are home and plan for it to take 2 years? It's taken me a long time to stop trying to "fit it all in" and relax. It's okay for the guide to last longer than a year and actually enjoy it and reap the benefits of what is in it than try to cram it in ...

Discovering Mathematics?

My dd12 has worked though Singapore 1-5.Following advice I had received years ago, I started her in Saxon 8/7 this year as pre-algebra. It's been okay, but my dd actually misses Singapore. I was scared to teach upper levels of Singapore, but I can see why she misses it. Saxon is not a bad program, j...

Re: Placement for a late blooming reader -PHFHG or CTC?

I will probably start dd7 on Beyond in the next week or two. I do not have Preparing yet, so I will have to wait a bit on that. Thanks again Carrie. I appreciate you taking the time to help me think this through.

Re: Placement for a late blooming reader -PHFHG or CTC?

She has only done about 6 units of Beyond last year. Her and her sister were combined this year for history, science, and Bible this year with another curriculum. I could see finishing Beyond with her. I can see how that would help me with time. I guess I could still start Rod and Staff and just con...

Re: Placement for a late blooming reader -PHFHG or CTC?

Thanks Edwena and Carrie. Carrie, I really agree with what you say. I feel that Preparing would help boost her confidence and not overwhelm her like CTC would do. I just needed to hear it from you :). There is a part of me that wants her to go through the whole history cycle before high school, but ...

Placement for a late blooming reader -PHFHG or CTC?

I've been pouring over the boards and reading and re-reading the catalog. :) I'll share my story... My dd, just turning 10 and a 4th grader, has taken her time in becoming independent in her reading. Last year she got through about unit 24 in Bigger. She actually did really well. She did not continu...

Re: A few dictation questions...

I actually have my younger 2, ages 7 and 9, copy the passage first, circle any special sounds learned in phonics, then I check it. Then I dictate the passage to them. It has helped them learn the spelling. I feel their copying is studying it.

Re: Where to Place

Just my own personal experience, don't do Bigger until he is reading. I pushed my dd8 into Bigger because I really want her to finish the history cycle before high school. She did Bigger just fine, but was not reading independently at the end so we couldn't start Preparing. Looking back it would hav...

Re: Curriculum junkie help!

Thanks ladies for that encouragement. So good to know your kids did well. If our kids are capable, they will rise to our expectation. When my oldest was in first grade, we used a different curriculum, she was narrating super long narrations. When she was in CTC in 5th grade, she would sometimes say ...

Re: Curriculum junkie help!

Ckemonster, I feel like we are in similar situations. I honestly can't figure out what to do with my kids next year. My oldest should move into MTMM. My next two will be in 3rd and 5th. My sweet, soon to be dd10 has taken quite a while to read. We went through Bigger last year, but because she wasn'...

What Unit for Hero Tales in Preparing?

Just wondering what unit do you start using Hero Tales in Preparing.
I have a copy that I loaned to a friend that doesn't live near me anymore, not quite sure when I can see her to get it back :).
Thanks,
Nicole :)

Thanks for your encouragement Julie. It sounds like a good idea to start slow. I imagine that is what we will do.

Re: Preparing then Bigger?

I've used MFW Adventures and ECC, HOD Bigger and about to start Preparing. I totally agree with pp. The difference in skills would make it feel like a step back if you did Preparing first. I think you could easily do Bigger coming from ECC and then Preparing. Bigger is a very different approach to A...

Re: Preparing with Emerging Reader?

She is finishing the Emerging Readers. We started them at the end of last year, and I have added other books throughout the year to give her more practice. Hopefully we will finish them this summer. I can see her doing better and better every day. I feel like she is finally at the point that she "ge...
