Re: Extra things made by you to ease your school day
I write their assignments on a dry erase board...that way they can erase things as they finish, and no extra papers in the house!

Re: Advice and Encouragement Needed
Congrats! These are pretty simple, but here are some ideas: Cut back on clutter in the house...if it isn't there, you don't have to pick it up! Also, I love to use the crockpot for dinner...I have "morning sickness" in the evenings, so it would be a big help to have dinner prepared when I felt...

Re: Feeling like the worst mom ever!
I feel funny posting on here, because I really struggle with this, yet somehow think I can pass on advice. I've threatened public school and cancelling outside lessons at least once this week. When this happens here, I apologize for my actions and I calmly explain why DD's action were wrong. ...

Re: How to combine a K and 2nd grader??
I placed my older two in Beyond when they were in K and 2nd. My K'er just missed the cut-off, so he was on the older side of K. He turned 6 a couple months after we started. It has been a pretty good fit...I don't think he got as much from the readings as my DD, but he really enjoyed the activities ...

Re: Suggestions for a newbie on school supplies
We're using Bigger this year. They have composition notebooks for English, dictation, vocabulary (you can also use index cards for vocab). We use cardstock for notebooking pages and have a binder with index tabs to separate subjects and clear page covers as well (If you don't use these, you'll want ...

Re: Health
When I lived in NE, I had to write out what topics we covered for health. I always listed a few covered through science (nutrition, anatomy, germs, etc.) as well as topics we covered through daily life (dental care, safety, good eating, PE, etc.). I think we do a pretty good job of covering it witho...

Re: Question about Bigger Extention package
They are intended to be read independently by the older student...in addition to the regular lesson. Since I'm using Bigger with 2 DC, I just read it aloud to the both of them. There are suggestions to add in narration throughout the week as well.

Re: Teacher's manuals for R&S
We use it daily for the review questions...that really helps DD remember what she's learned. I've also used it a few times to check the sentence diagrams. We're using level 3.

Re: What grade level is Beyond considered?
We used it for 1st and 3rd last year. It was a better fit for my 3rd grader...although she did the 3Rs portion of Bigger. My DS didn't get as much from the readings as DD did, but he enjoyed the activities and had no trouble with the 3Rs portion.

Re: Curious about Math levels
We were already using Singapore before we switched to HOD. One of my DC started at age 6.5 (and is now in 3a at age 9...so she'd be slightly "behind") and the other started at a young 5 (and is now in 1B at age 7). I like them to be able to read the directions when they start, so that's been my cue ...

Re: Kiddos LOVE read alouds from Beyond choices!
We love all the choices! Our Beyond read-aloud list was very different from yours, but we still had an amazing time with the books! The emerging reader books are also great! I was just talking to a mom using another reading program and realized how blessed we are with using actual books compared to ...

Re: Anyone switched from Math Mammoth to Singapore?
We've used both in the past, and I think the math process is very similar. We are back to using only SM, but I plan on adding MM if we ever need more review than SM. My oldest prefers SM...I think because of the colorful texts as well as the manipulative-based lessons.

I love Educating the Whole Hearted Child and For the Children's Sake. The Mission of Motherhood is another great one...It's more general that CM, but another great read.

Re: How do you facilitate poetry copywork?
I change it a bit as they get older. To start with, we use loose copywork paper (with 1/2" lines). I copy the poem and leave a line between for them to copy it below me...that way they can focus on writing their letters correctly and not trying to figure out what to write. Then they move onto copyin...

Re: New to HOD, Suggestions for Week 1?
We're on our 2nd guide and I've always done them at half pace for at least couple weeks...it's a bit overwhelming to show them how to do new things (and figure them out yourself too). By doing a half day, you can do things more slowly and make sure they are done correctly without feeling rushed.
