Thankful we came back

It's only day 4 of our first week of school this year, and I am so thankful that we came back to HOD. We left, not because of HOD, but because I wasn't able to do the guides as written and thought it would be better if we held off until my kids had the skills to do the guides as written. My 10 year ...

Re: We're back

Thank you Laura and Nancy. I appreciate your words of wisdom. It is very true that they learn at a much higher level than their skills permit. I'm also realizing that I can present the same material to 7 year old and a 10 year old, and the 10 year old will be able to comprehend much more of the mate...

Re: We're back

Wendy and Carrie, Thank you so much. I can't wait to start. I will just wait and see where their skills are before making any decisions about next year. :D . There's no need to worry about that now. Thank you again! I'm glad to be back!!!

Re: We're back

Hi Wendy, You are right, I didn't really give much information about the skill level of my twins. They have dyslexia as well. My daughter is still really struggling with reading, but her twin brother seems to be moving along pretty well. He is reading the ER set right now with ease. She on the other...

We're back

I'm happy to finally say we are back and have a couple of questions. We are lovers of HOD and have completed LHTH, LHFHG and Beyond, but along the way, we discovered that our oldest had some learning differences and things got tough for us by the time we got to Bigger. He didn't fit neatly into the ...

Re: HOD Preparing and Dyslexia

Sarah, If I could jump through the computer and hug you I would. Thank you so much. Yes, that is what I need a calm heart and a quiet spirit. I know that is where the Lord wants me. When my ds is struggling more than usual, I seem to have more patience, but when I start to see progress, I'm off and ...

Re: Need help with Singapore 1B

I would make sure she gets this concept. My daughter had some trouble getting this also, and I wouldn't let her move on until she got it. Do you have any base ten blocks? The one thing that really helped my daughter was an abacus. She would sit and play with it and it started to sink in that if 8+3 ...

We started Science in Bigger today

We started science in Bigger today, and I was stumped. It took me awhile to figure out how the moon affected the tides. When the moon is directly overhead or directly below us, the earths water and crust are pulled making the earth more oval. It is like if you had a balloon and wanted to pull one si...

Re: HOD Preparing and Dyslexia

Thank you all who responded. It gives me encouragement to keep on moving forward. I think we are heading on the right path. I'm actually going to go ahead and start Beyond with my twins and the rest of Bigger with my 9 year old. We probably needed some time away to focus on the basics, but I was mis...

Re: Singapore 3A word problems

 Ok, I haven't been following the guide. I think that's my problem. LOL. I've been trying to push him along, because I feel he is a little behind what he is capable of doing. Everything seemed pretty easy for him until the 2 step word problems. Multiplication is going great, so I think I will ...

HOD Preparing and Dyslexia

I've used LHFHG, Beyond and portions of Bigger this year. I love HOD, but I've struggled with making everything work for us. All three of my kids have dyslexia and it seems the guides are based on reading ability. My oldest is probably the most severe. He's super creative and his ability to comprehe...

Re: Singapore 3A word problems

Thanks for your help. I haven't been working through all the text book problems, and I think I've actually been skipping the textbook when it comes to the word problems. I just noticed that today, so your post is confirmation that I need to be using the text for word problems also. I think I'll just...

Singapore 3A word problems

We have just hit two step word problems, and I really have to help my son a lot. Is this pretty normal when they are first learning to figure this all out? I really walk him through it. He would have no idea what to do if I didn't help him. He can do the mental math in his head, but the language of ...
