Re: serious character help
I haven't read her book, but I did read the reviews. I'm a little worried about her term "separation." It doesn't work for a parent to ostracize and oversee every single decision, to the extreme. I normally fall onto the side of non-censorship when at all possible. Obviously if aggressive behavior i...

Re: serious character help
Hello Ladies, I certainly feel your pain. I was not homeschooling when my oldest two were tiny. So it looks like you have an older dau with younger son (8 vs 6.5) then you have toddlers. My first thougth is they are still very little. I agree with the Kansas poster that for outright very bad behavio...

Re: Foreign Language?? Help please
but a few explanations would make things so easier. Things like put 'ne - pas' around the verb for a negative. Or add 'e' to the end to make things feminine. Especially how almost all verb ending change the same for each pronoun. Like 'ent' for plural male and female or 'ez' for collective 'you'. S...

Re: A new challenge - disinterested and distracted 12yo
Tansy and pjboro, Thank you both for your responses. Tansy I use that line of thinking with my oldest and its quite effective, but with my 12 yo he has no outside activities. And he's not allowed to pursue his interests at home until he does his school work. Hi ladies, I feel your pain. I'm not the...

Re: Sons wants to study a different history
I agree with previous poster, don't disrupt your HOD flow and plan. My other suggestion is you might look at www.yesterdaysclassics.com to add a living book for comtemorary american history. Carrie has choosen many readers from this company and they are very good. This might be enough to satisfy his...

Re: I need to find a new place to vent
Wow! I can understand why you are mad! To imply that your children are not safe with you because you homeschool is unforgiveable almost . I think because facebook should be a place where you can have "tea" with your friends, I would quietly "unfriend" some people. I had to do that with a classmate t...

Re: Listening comprehension skills
hmm that's a good question and hard to respond without observing him. I let the storytime components (history, science read aloud component etc) be a relaxing time for his school day. When I'm reading a story, I don't normally stop too often to check comprehension, your narration tasks will do that ...

Re: New to HOD and need help
Bigger is a good fit for the new homeschooler. There is a lot of meat to the program and the children will get a good dose of American history before they start their world history cycles. What grade is your child in at the church? This may seem like a silly question but I think it makes a big impac...

Re: New to HOD and need help
Hello Alicia and welcome to HOD! Sounds like language arts are a strength for your girls. Look at Carrie's placement chart. Do one for each child. Circle the best answer in each column. Then look at where they fall. Your 8.5 year old could be placed either Bigger or Preparing easily. It depends on w...

Re: Frustrated
Hello Starla, Yes, I think you are correct in believing there has been a placement mistake. Though your children have started their school life in "1st grade" or so probably too soon a few years ago, you can repair it. You said they are 7 and 8 and getting ready to turn a year older. My 8 year old i...

Re: Struggling with my 5th grader
Hello Amy, You said this is your first year hs? Did you just start in August then? I have found with children in public schools that it takes them almost 9 months to "de-program" I know that sounds crazy but my daughter who had finished 5th grade and we started hs that next summer, it was a shock. S...

Re: Read-aloud question
Also, since we are talking about read alouds, there's actually two different kinds of reading going on with your child and with the HOD manuals. The storytime component of HOD is where mom(or dad) reads aloud to the child. This is where you'll choose books a little above their reading level and why ...

Hey Julie! It was awesome to read your summary of the science coverage. I really had never thought to add up the experiments like that and I am truly impressed all over again. Makes me wish now, I hadn't skipped so many in the Beyond manual -- :) With my work schedule and homeschooling at night, it ...

Re: Scripture Memory - preferred version?
Just wondering which translation you prefer to do scripture memory with. :D Last year with DS (then 6) I was using the KJV. This year I've gone to the ESV but in a way I miss the poetic flow of the KJV. :D I've heard in other circles that reading the KJV prepares young minds for reading rich litera...

Re: Read-aloud question
Hello Ladies, Interesting things to think about. .. When I work with patrons, the biggest hurdle for them to begin to understand is the idea of storytime where mom still reads to child who is capable of reading! That seems to be a big lesson. With HOD, you all already know this -- because you are re...
