Re: where to have kids tested

Gwenny - I can so identify with you. My daughter's math skills were pretty much like that. Near the end of 3rd grade, I took her to an education specialist, who told me she didn't have number sense. She gave me a special program to use with her, which helped, and now she is understanding more, and h...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically

If you don't want to use an expensive program, Phonics Pathways is an inexpensive book that may help. I am using that with my almost 12yo daughter. She has dyslexia and some of the same characteristics as your daughter. Work on reading fluency rather than spelling rules. Although Phonics Pathways do...

Re: Getting Prepared for Preparing

I've not been on much lately. Sorry I didn't reply to your question for me. Are you doing DITHOR level 2 books without the guide? If that is what I understand you are doing, I would suggest getting Carrie's book list if you don't already have it. That would give you more choices in the level that yo...

Re: Just wondering......

Shelly,
Thanks! Listening to CDs is fine. I guess using the books would make it last longer. I, too, like the variety in HOD. I have to stop looking ahead, because I get anxious about using upcoming books, and we have a long way to go before we get to some of them. :)

Just wondering......

In CTC, Res to Ref, and Rev to Rev, Diana Waring's books, "What in the World?" are being used. I just wondered if they are used entirely, or just parts of them. I thought one volume of that would be a complete history curriculum, so, with all the other books scheduled in each guide, how would you be...

Re: A Child's Geo. in CTC

It will be over a year until we get to CTC, but looking at some of the pages in this book, I expect my daughter will like it. Geography is tough for her because of her visual perception problems, especially in reading maps. I think this book will make it more interesting for her. :D

Re: What to do? Need help!

I think it would be difficult to keep them together for those things you mentioned. It looks like you would have to use at least 3 different guides if you do LHTH with the youngest. As far as your dyslexic son, have you used Bigger with him yet? I had done half of Bigger with my dyslexic daughter wh...

Re: Please pray for my family!

The lady I mentioned in my previous post would be more than willing to talk to you. She did recommend that you try to find what I believe she called 'grief share'. She has been involved in one of those groups at a church and I believe it has been helpful. When I told her about you, I could see the p...

Re: Please pray for my family!

I am so sorry! I will be praying for you. Our hope is Jesus. Allow His Holy Spirit to comfort you. It would be good for you to talk to someone who has been through something like this. There is a lady in our church who lost her husband a little over six years ago. She had 6 very young children and w...

Re: Getting Prepared for Preparing

I have an 11yo who does not do much reading independently yet. It is mostly due to dyslexia/visual perception problems. But, I am seeing her showing a little more interest in reading for pleasure, as long as they are books that are not too hard. Maybe you could give him easy books to read on his own...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading

Is your son currently reading the ER books? If he has not read all the ER books, I would finish those first. if he is finishing the ER books and you feel he is not ready for DITHOR, you could have him read the supplemental titles or find similar level books to have him read for awhile. it sounds lik...

Re: still have questions...

As far as getting books at the library, that would work for storytime and DITHOR, if you are doing it. I recommend getting science and history books from HOD. You get a nice discount on the package, and even if your library has those books, you run into the possibility of them not being available wh...

Re: finishing ER 2/3's of the way done the year

We are also finishing the ER books. My daughter also just started The Bears on Hemlock Mountain. I plan to just let her read other books from Carrie's list or books from the library that I feel are on or about the level of reading she is doing. There are many titles on Carrie's list that I can't fin...

Re: OT - Prayer request

I just had a thought! We have been reading about Ben Franklin in Bigger history. I think a field trip in Philadelphia would be a splendid idea! Maybe the Franklin Institute. We haven't been there for a long time. Maybe we can get our 180 days in a little sooner after all. :D

Daneale, I'm glad I can be an encouragement. I enjoy this board and know I can trust it. This is the only board I really spend time on anymore. I just know that this board is full of moms who love the Lord and have much wisdom. You, among many others, have been an encouragement to me. Yes, we are re...
