Re: Bigger Bible Study

We use the KJV as well. I need to explain some things to Angie because of the wording sometimes, but she understands many passages and knows many stories from reading easy books and hearing stories in Sunday School and church. I'm glad Julie explained it. I don't want Bible to become frustrating. I ...

Re: Week-in-Review Jan. 12-16, 2015

This week Angie said she 'loved' school! :D I'm not really sure what brought her to this point, but it did my heart good. :D I'm sure HOD plays some part in it. Our days have been going well, and, Julie, I wrote down a 'routine' for doing the boxes/subjects. :) Angie likes following t...

Re: Bigger Bible Study

We are only on unit 5 in Bigger, but I see a similar situation with my daughter. But, she has some processing difficulties to begin with. She does not pick up on certain things in a longer passage, so with some questions I need to re-read some verses. Then she will usually get it. It's not only with...

Re: Reading help and other ?'s

If he can read fluently, then he definitely could go with the Reading Lesson, if you think he still needs some reading instruction. If you decide to use it with the 5 yo, you may be able to start the 7yo later in the book, since he is already reading some. I tried K at home with my dd and we had all ...

Re: Reading help and other ?'s

For the younger child, I would recommend just doing one of the reading programs that Carrie has scheduled in the Little Hearts guide. You could have the older child do it too. Maybe shorter reading lessons would be better for you 7 yo. Unless he has a learning disability, he shouldn't need more than...

Re: OT: Dyslexia and NOT using OG method

countrymom - Your method for reading practice sounds interesting. What you said about repetition is absolutely right. Once I could tell my daughter's reading was improving, it wasn't an OG method that continued to help her. It was just the practice of reading. I have a little stick with a pointed fi...

Re: habit of attention

Thanks for the encouragement, Julie. Keeping a routine. Something I have tried so often, and just can't stick to it. When I read your posts, it inspires me to try again. Honestly, since we are doing HOD again, I feel I could have somewhat of a routine, at least for school. I am...

Re: OT: Dyslexia and NOT using OG method

My 11yo daughter has dyslexia. We did Barton for a while. While the early levels were a stepping stone for her, we ended up stopping in the middle of level three. Too many spelling rules. If you are using Phonics Pathways, I think you are on a good path. We did use it for a while, but my daughter's ...

Re: habit of attention

Julie - Thanks for posting here. I have been dealing with the attention issue, with Angie and myself. It is sooo easy to get distracted. Angie likes to be doing things with her hands when I read. I don't let her when we are doing Bible and typically not when we are reading history. But, durin...

Re: Week-in-Review Jan. 5-9, 2015

This is my first review since coming back to HOD in November. Hopefully I will eventually have some pictures. :) We just finished unit 4 in Bigger, and I can indeed say this is starting out to be a more pleasant journey than when we did part of Bigger two years ago. Our homeschooling is so much more...

Re: discouraged, would love some prayer and advice

I can't give you any wise advice, because I have exactly the same personality! :) I was never structured with my older three when homeschooling. I know much of it had to do with how I grew up. Not that I think my parents did a bad job raising us, but we were not designated certain thin...

Re: Does HOD include phonics "rules" for spelling and readin

I agree that spelling is best learned by reading (and writing). My daughter was doing an OG method for her reading because she has dyslexia. It helped her reading, but when she reached a certain level it was just spelling rule after spelling rule. It was frustrating for her to try remember all those...

Re: Question about copywork in cursive

Melissa,
Thanks for the reassurance. :) I was just wondering where I find "Setting Up Preparing". I basically stick to this general board, so I'm not sure what you were referring to.
