Re: Newbie to HOD-question about Aesop's in Preparing
I don't have answers...I actually had a question along those same lines. I have several aesops books and so, b/c of limited funds, didn't want to buy another one, although I think I can get the one in Preparing from the library if I had too.

Re: OT: pencil sharpener
Thanks for your suggestions ladies... I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has a pencil sharpener problem! Finding a vintage one on ebay may be my #1 choice. But how hard should it be to make a new pencil sharpener that is as good as one that is 30 years old?? A friend recently clued me in abou...

OT: pencil sharpener
Okay, I feel kind of silly asking this.. but each school year we go through at least one pencil sharpener. They either break or just don't work very well. Does anyone have a pencil sharpener that they LOVE?? We currently are using those little tiny ones that come in back to school kits which get the...

Re: Juggling kids
Hi, So here is my 2 cents :) I have a 10 yr old boy who wil be 11 in Nov also, he started preparing at the end of this school year and is loving it. He was doing Bigger with his 9 year old sister for most of the year but I decided to split them up. I combined them in Beyond the year before and so fo...

Re: Bigger - adapting for a child who does not like to write.
I know how frustrating that is b/c I had that problem with both of my older children. I started them in Bigger a couple of years ago and it was sooo painful for me b/c they came to dread the day with all of the writing. After a few weeks we moved to Beyond and they LOVED it and then we did Bigger th...

OT: Climate Change
It seems we can't go to a museum or even a friends house without the subject of climate change coming up. Especially in context of how important it is to recycle, use compostables, ride bikes, use the right light bulbs, and even drink "rainforest approved" coffee (my kids looked at me when that when...

Re: Self Study Deluxe VS Extensions
We have recently started Preparing with my 10 yr old son and have found the self study/independent history readings to be very important to the program-- they are written in to the lesson plans (but apparently are still optional). We are doing some of the extentions as well--the schedule for the ext...

Re: Spelling
No, you don't need to buy a separate spelling program. I copied this from the website-- "For spelling, students focus on learning to spell a basic body of frequently used words. Next, they move on to studied dictation to cement their spelling skills. As students become more confident spellers, they ...

Re: did I bite off more than I can chew? Uncombining...
I had considered moving my son to CTC but that won't work for us financially right now.. I'm working on collecting all the books bit by bit (if I find them at a used bookstore) and saving my money at the same time so I can purchase all I need from HOD at one time. My son loves Preparing and so at th...

Re: did I bite off more than I can chew? Uncombining...
Thank you ladies for your replies, they have been helpful. Julie, I LOVE your schedule and I can actually just replace your kids names with mine :) b/c even though my oldest is doing a different program then your oldest it seems to match up well. One question though-- when is your oldest doing DITHO...

did I bite off more than I can chew? Uncombining...
A few weeks ago I separated my oldest two into different programs-- keeping dd in Bigger(we've about 1 1/2 -2 months left) and moved ds into Preparing. Both kids are loving it, esp my son. I enjoy the individual time I have with the kids and we still have over an hour of stuff we do together. But I ...

So glad you and your son are enjoying it so much too. My son is also surprised by the fact that he likes the Draw and Write through history book.. he told me a couple of days ago "look, mom, I can draw!"

Grandpa's Box
My son and I just recently started reading this book together for Preparing. My son is so excited to read a book in which the main boy character is someone who loves military history, plays with miniature war figures and doesn't admire superheroes!! He can completely relate to this and I think it ha...

Re: Un-combining? placement help
Just wanted to update you all... I decided to start my son in Preparing and keep my daughter in Bigger and so far they are loving it, especially my son. He tells me every day how much he likes school now that he can do so much of it on his own. My daughter now gets more of my undivided attention and...

Re: handwriting for a 4 year old
The dry erase board is a great idea-- she will love that and hopefully with 3 teachers (myself, and her older brother and sister) we will be able to keep up with her :) She loooves to do worksheets and workbooks--she just can't get enough of them-- so I'm getting to use up the workbooks I bought for...
