Re: making the first day of school joyful

I'm not sure yet what my oldest will be using next year. The youngers will be doing HOD and I'm not sure I can cope with two different HOD curriculums at once. She always listens in on their history stories. They all enjoy those. I had hoped to have everyone working from the same guide, but after lo...

Re: Catalog brings character training

My four boys love the HOD catalog, too. I wonder where they got that from. :D I think my ds 10 has read it from cover to cover. The boys often grab it first thing in the morning and look at it together in bed, and the 3 yo looks through it and finds the LHTH guides and says, "This one me." I'm not ...

making the first day of school joyful

My oldest child does not enjoy school time and her attitude is spreading to the little kids. Maybe throughout the summer we can collect some ideas about how to make that first day back to school in August a fun day. My kids do not look forward to "Box Day" or looking at the catalog or any of that. H...

Re: conquering the springtime blues

I just wanted to chime in when I saw you were in the Nevada desert. We spent 4 years in Las Vegas (we are Air Force), and though it was a hard place to live in, we found a lot of nice places to hike and such. I only homeschooled one year there, but we did a lot of fieldtrips to Red Rock Canyon, Spr...

Re: conquering the springtime blues

Update: I've been offering a reward (run in the sprinkler, get your toenails polished, etc) for kids who are done with schoolwork by a certain time. This is really helping!
And we're down to three weeks left. I think I can do this. :D

Re: Bigger Hearts with Extension Package

Thanks, Catbeth! After looking at the chart I am thinking my littles might fit better in the previous book. I already have that book--actually the whole package--so this could save us a lot of money---and as we just had a very unpleasant surprise at tax time, money is something I have to keep in min...

Re: Bigger Hearts with Extension Package

Since Bigger Hearts is targeted for ages 7-9 with extensions for ages 10-11, we wouldn't recommend for a 6 year old to do Bigger Hearts. :D This is because the skill level and amount of the written work in Bigger Hearts will be very difficult for a 6 year old. When thinking of placement in HOD, it'...

Re: conquering the springtime blues

We have lovely Springs here, but hot and humid summers. Last year, I started school in the middle of the summer, when no one wanted to go outside, so we'll be finished every year in the early spring. We've had a lot of school days outside lately, too. If my husband wasn't a school teacher, and home...

Re: conquering the springtime blues

I should mention that my kids like the history reading in Little Pilgrims. *That* is not difficult to hold their interest.

Which computer games do you have?

Re: conquering the springtime blues

What unit are you on? Can you maybe switch your schedule around so you start break now and pick back up with school once it gets too hot to be outside? Maybe go half pace now and over the summer so you can have more freetime? I think we're on 27. We will be doing math through the summer. We switche...

conquering the springtime blues

My children and I have reached that point in the springtime where we just don't want to do school. It's beautiful outside (and we're in the desert so summer is NOT a beautiful time, but spring is) and the kids are all just bored with the whole idea of school. I want to find a way to make school a li...

Re: DITHOR question

I am definitely going to buy the book package for next year's DITHOR. We like the curriculum, we just keep forgetting to get the books from the library.
