Re: Dictation woes
Something to consider would be to choose portions of text from books that she is interested in and have her do dictation from those. This could help her enjoy it more. You can jump back into the dictation passages in the Appendix at a later time.

World Geography - book selections for Fund. of Literature
Around the World in 80 Days and Treasure Island are books listed for book selections for Fundamentals of Literature in World Geography. I already have these books, but what I am unsure of is if the books listed in the catalog are abridged or unabridged. Can someone who has done this course before le...

Re: Is my daughter ready for DITHOR?
DITHOR is intended to be started once the student can read chapter books confidently and independently. If your child is not at that point yet, then just figure out where she would land in the Emerging Readers set, listed in the Beyond and Bigger guides. The ER set will take your child through the r...

Re: Can Dictation be done together?
My daughter (10) and my son (9) are on 2 different levels of dictation. Is there any way for me to do them at the same time, or would this just be too confusing. I am thinking it would probably be too confusing for one child to be working on a phrase and to hear another child's phrase being read. M...

Re: Preparing Question - Basic Package Read-Alouds
I would definitely include the storytime books. We have really enjoyed reading them together. Besides the History book, "Grandpa's Box", they are our favorite part of Preparing. The books tie in so nicely with the time period being studied in history. We have also really enjoyed the Independent Hist...

Re: What dictionary do you have for your kids to use?
We use a good Children's Dictionary. This has worked for us and the definitions are much easier to understand. Only occasionally has there been a word they've been doing that isn't in the children's dictionary. In that case we have used the free online children's dictionaries - one is wordsmyth.net ...

Re: Question about Emerging Reader's reading level
I'll just follow the ER set they way they are in the guide, and if it gets too difficult, we can substitute. When it seems your child comes to a place were they should have more practice before they move continue on in the Emerging Readers schedule, Carrie has a list of alternative titles in the pr...

Re: Question about Emerging Reader's reading level
the books listed in order might be 2.0, 2.7, 2.9, 2.5, 3.0, 2.8. If my ds is a struggling reader, should I follow the schedule in the guide, or should I follow the increase in reading level? In regards to the Emerging Readers, just follow the schedule in the guide, you really don't need to pay atte...

Re: Are Changes Needed?
At that age, children grow so quickly in some of these areas. Sometimes within a few weeks or a few months something clicks and they "get" it. They could grow so much during the course of a guide. I would encourage to slowly keep working at each area (phonics, fine motor skills) and see where he's a...

Re: Drawing in Preparing - Encouragement
The same story here in this house...my kids have really gotten quite good. I'm so glad that we didn't give up and my husband and I just kept encouraging them. Now, they are both so proud when they've completed something and see how well they've done!

Re: Preparing poetry
I have to admit that the creative writing box was intimidating to me and my kids at first. But now we are half way through Preparing and my kids have really grown, not only in their creative ability but also in their confidence. Not all of the assignments are poetry, for instance, Unit 14 is writing...
