Re: Emerging Reader Struggle

I think that having her read the Beginner's Bible would be a good option. I have read on the board that many of the moms have their children read through both Bibles. When my daughter first began the Beginner's Bible it was slow going but by the time she got to the middle her reading took off. Now s...

Re: Missionaries/Missions

I am a missionary and homeschool mom and my husband and I have been working with Youth With A Mission for 17 years (a blog would be a cool idea but as of now I don't have one). Even though my kids have grown up around missionaries their whole lives, it has taken thought from me as well as to how to ...

Re: At my wit's end with ds9...again.

I'm so sorry! A resource that has been invaluable to me is the book "Help for the Harried Homeschooler" by Christine M. Field. It's one of the most balanced and helpful books on homeschooling I've ever seen. I have prayed that God would guide you - that He would give you wisdom and discernment and t...

Re: Singapore Math 2nd grade.....

Much of what was shared about the Singapore way refers to the books coming in the higher levels. As long as you're teaching the lessons in the HOD guides and doing the assigned workbook pages, you're doing just fine. Your children will naturally come up through Singapore and will be getting it that...

Re: Singapore Math 2nd grade.....

So...um...after reading through this whole post I think that I am more unsure about my decision to use Singapore this year and feel more lost than I did teaching my kids math this morning. This is my first year teaching Singapore. Both of my kids have taken the placement test and because I knew Sing...

Re: Question about cursive

I, too, think that it's still good to learn cursive, especially for the sake of them being able to read it themselves. I am teaching two boys, ages 8 &9, with Cheerful Cursive and it is their favorite thing in school right now. Cheerful Cursive has made it fun for them to learn to read and write "fa...

Re: Julie or others-Beyond Timeline?

Last year, I was doing Beyond with three children. They each had their own timeline. They were each able to draw their own pics in each box and write in the date and title. It helped them to better retain the info when they were each doing it themselves.

Re: Beyond and spelling list question

I would think that if she missed 4 words on the last day of spelling in that unit - I would use those same words the following unit. That's what I think I would do. But maybe some others will respond too. HTH!

Re: storytime with Beyond

Both of my children really enjoyed the storytime with Beyond last year. Because of the comments that I had read on the board here about really taking time to read through a book; to really think about it and savor it we only read one title in each genre during school time. We took the full 20 days t...

Re: School Bible Verse

Our school verse is Mark 12:30. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength". This helps us to remember why we are doing what we are doing. We are learning to love God with all our hearts, souls, minds and with all our strength!

Re: Bigger independence question

Are you planning to have your 5th grader doing the extension package in Bigger? It's my understanding that the extension package would be used by your 5th grader and that it's intended to be done mostly independently by the child.

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime

During "school time" we only read what was scheduled in the Teacher's Manual and stayed on course through the entire program. But, we did read other read-alouds while having tea in the afternoons or at bed-time.

Re: Narrating/comprehension issues

My nephew has had similar issues. One thing that helped him was to draw pictures about what is being read to him. Then he could use the pictures he drew to help him narrate back. If your son likes to draw maybe this would be helpful for him. I also agree with only reading short portions (starting wi...

Re: ideas for a child with auditory processing issues

Thank you ladies for your encouragement and ideas! Some of these we have already been doing since I've started teaching him and have seen improvement in comprehension and narration. You have given me ideas of other things to try as well. we also use auditory processing games to up her ability to hol...
