Re: When the younger one is passing the older....
Thank you for that! We don't allow taunting. And I've talked to my older three (who are in school now and very competitive with their grades, in a fun good natured way) that they need to tone the talk of grades down and talk more about how hard they are working. Because hard work is the important pa...

Re: Prayers for Evie today
I'm severe  it is truly amazing how well she reads now. She doesn't have the glasses, just the overlays right now. We didn't have the money to get the glasses yet. But even with the overlays, she's reading easily two grade levels above where she was. In just a month. I have to say that whethe...

Re: Prayers for Evie today
She definitely has Irlen Syndrome. She got her colored overlays and the difference in how she read from no overlays, the wrong color overlays, and the correct ones is amazing. It's definitely over one grade level higher with the correct overlays! The charting for diagnosing Irlen goes from 0(no sign...

Prayers for Evie today
I've posted about Evie's troubles in the past... basically she really struggles with processing between written, auditory, and spoken language.... in other words what she sees vs what she hears vs what she speaks is totally different for her. And because of this reading is a HUGE issue. Her "symptom...

Re: Finishing math early
I will definitely look into the chaining word problem books! I was looking for examples of the principles of math, but couldn't find any. Knowing it's pre-algebra really helps. Between the math just getting harder, her getting bored with repetition (we only did 6 problems today because she is SO VER...

Re: Finishing math early
So Principles of Math 1/2.... is that more math or is it pre algebra... or something else? I will look into it more when I have time, but thought I'd ask anyway. I can see her slowing down simply because she won't want to do all the work it entails between the guides and the math   but t...

Finishing math early
I have posted before about my concerns with Penelope (6 years old, LHFHG, math/handwriting at her pace, not quite reading, but close... can read familiar words in context) passing Evie (10 next month, finishing Bigger and starting Preparing around her birthday, right side at her pace with a bit of p...

Re: Using math textbooks and grammar teacher’s guide
As far as the grammar teacher's guide goes, I've never had one and I've used through level 5 (or 6 maybe... I can't remember what my older two got to honestly). In my opinion the student book is good enough. And we do 90% of the entire thing orally anyway. And grammar hasn't ever been my strong suit...

Re: LHFHG for an older student
With your age gap I have a couple of suggestions. One is you can continue Bigger half speed for a while for your 9yo to grow into it. Maybe require less writing (we don't require the copying the poem or the vocabulary written work for my 9yo for instance... possibly some other things that I'm just n...

Re: New to DITHOR, HELP!!!
First of all, if you are having to help your 9yo multiple times on a page for reading then you might need to back away from the ERs. They aren't supposed to be for reading instruction as much as they should be for comprehension. Maybe check out the alternate books for each unit of ER for him to read...

Re: When the younger one is passing the older....
Thank you for that link! I was coming on here to bump my post. My problem is not at all getting them to do the work. I have no trouble with these two. My second daughter would do as little as possible and as a result my third passed her. But that was an easy answer. "She does more work than you each...

When the younger one is passing the older....
This hasn't happened yet, and might not be an issue because I'm aware that at some point Penelope will hit something she struggles with. But if you have a child who is significantly younger (3.5 years) than an older one, and the younger child has caught up or passed the older one, how do you explain...

Re: Multiple ages
I agree... I would either combine the older two in LHFHG or the younger two in LHTH. Personally I think I'd do Beyond, continuing phonics instead of the Emerging Readers with the older one, slowly if necessary. And I'd combine the younger two in LHTH. I'd add in all the K level workbooks from LHFHG ...

Re: Multiple Guides
That's how I do multiple guides as well... I start the oldest with any semi independent boxes, explain any directions they don't understand, and send them off to work on their part of the teacher boxes and the independent boxes... As the year progresses my kids have all started reading part or all (...
