Placement
Ok, my last post on the topic of doing 3 levels at once, made me realize I need some advice about placing my oldest dd. I was reading down the placement chart and realized I was reading the Revival to Rev when I thought I was reading the REsur. to REf column. That is when it hit me, that hmm, I was ...

Re: Bigger with Extensions
I noticed this too. I would replace them- or skip them in the extension area- because they are part of the main section where they appear later on. Though I do believe Carrie offered a science alternative for those who had already covered Exploring Planet Earth, and I would/will be opting for that o...

Re: Multiple levels at once questions
I am bumping this because for some reason when I log into the boards I can't find it without 'searching' for it... i am not sure why, but figure if no one can find it, they can't read LOL.....

Re: Multiple levels at once questions
Ok I had started a response and apparently I take too long and it logged me out  Anyway, I am not sure where exactly dd would fall. She is definatley ready for writing instruction. She was doing Rod and Staff 4 this past year. She could do the simple diagramming easily, but the more complex dia...

Re: Multiple levels at once questions
Unfortunately, my thoughts are very jumbled at this point. I have loved the 2 years that I have used HOD with my older dd's. I loved the time the older girls spent using HOD Little Hands with my littles. Looking on though I have concerns in many areas. While I am not a parent to "push" children in e...

Re: Multiple levels at once questions
I had my dd's combined last year in Bigger. My oldest dd did the extension package. I was supplementing extra geography for her this past school year when they were working together- and she was working her own math level, I added spelling to her level and did Rod and Staff grammar with her on her l...

Multiple levels at once questions
I have a few questions about doing multiple levels with different children in the same year. My oldest dd is 11- working on 6th grade material (behind in math, but advanced in reading). My 2nd oldest is 9 and working on 4th grade (these grades are for next year). My twins are 6 and I plan to work Ki...

Re: We Start Monday! And a Q about blubber illustration
Having done this experiement a few times in the past-- I Would think vaseline would work as a substitute for the shortening, but that is going to be expensive. If you make your own chicken stock and chill it, then take the fat off the top, that should work too- it is fat after all (the one I have do...

Re: How do you set up notebooks for Bigger?
This has been very helpful. If I am looking at the information properly Ok so, if I interpretting it correctly- it seems 3 notebooks (dictation, language skills, poetry/copywork), 2 ways to organize and enough index cards for 2 subjects (vocabulary/spelling and Bible verses), and 2 ways to organize ...

Re: Record keeping
I found a very nice resource- donnayoung.org-- that has all kinds of printables. I write in subjects across the top as column headings and down the side, each row I can have a heading for date. I put 2 of each of these in each of my children's "main folder"-- I got them each a 3 ring binder to be th...

Re: DITHOR and storytime questions
Ok am I doing too hard of books for my dd- when I divided the number of pages by 15 days most of the genre's are somewhere around 13 or so pages per day, and I thought that was decent- actually the few that were down around 7 pages, I thought I had to add an additional book to. My storytime readings...

Re: Optional Supplemental Emerging Readers... Awesome!
I agree, the titles I have seen not only the emerging readers, but also the storytime books and many of the DITHOR books-- I love the choices. I actually was even more pleased when I got the Beyond Guide and looked at the suggestions in the back of the book! Even though we own a TON of books, the su...

Re: DITHOR read aloud suggested
Julie, Thank you, yes that answers my question. It is mentioned in like step 5 or something of getting started I think. Regardless, as I was looking over my book selections, and what I needed to do for DITHOR, I saw it, and thought it was probably for those not using the HOD guides, but wanted to ve...

Re: Emerging Readers Additional Suggestions?
I am apparently still being unclear in my question. What I want to know is, do children of this age- about 2nd grade, working through emerging readers, around 8 yrs old- need additional reading above and beyond what they are doing in the Emerging readers set? The dd I am working with, is not one who...

Re: DITHOR and storytime questions
When you say short- how 'short' are you talking about? What is an average amount of time or number of pages etc to cover in one sitting? (avg for story time, and an average amount to have a child cover in DITHOR- say level 3 or 4)
