Re: Which level???
Hi Kathleen, I read through your description of your ds. I have a question. Can you explain the last sentence in this quote from your post, please? It sounds like someone likes to keep things challenging in your house. :) Is this your feeling after observing his work and attitude toward learning or ...

Re: Back from our researching/planning/brainstorming retreat...
Carrie and Julie, Thank you for all you do. I hope you were able to get away to a beautiful, serene place that fueled the creative fires. :D Will you implement this newest plan on your oldest for tweaking this upcoming year? I can't wait to hear about it. I would love to hear more of the HOD story. ...

Re: Preparing Half-speed?
Thank you, Julie. Let me fill you in on my motivation. I really would like to see my upcoming fifth grader in CTC. My husband and I have not decided what 6th grade on up will look like for him, because there are several great co-op options in our area. The focus in CTC is so rich. If, for some reaso...

Re: Another HOD question: extensions in Preparing
Hi! I'm looking at my copy of Preparing for next year. Um....Extension pages to be read each day range from 2 pages of some books to a chapter of The Bronze Bow to 2 and 3 chapters of Shakespeare Stealer . There is not a uniform length of time spent on each book. The books used over three weeks are:...

Preparing Half-speed?
I am rethinking my original plan to combine my dc in Preparing with extensions for the older. The thought occured to me that I could possibly do CTC with my 10 yo ds and do Preparing half-speed (take two years) with my soon-to-be 8 yo ds. My oldest will be in fifth grade and my youngest will be in t...

Playschool,
I went back into my post and editted my misdirected links.
It was my first try
Glad it helped anyway!

Re: choosing the right level
Hi mer :) , Welcome aboard! I am finishing my first year with HOD using Bigger. We have soo enjoyed Bigger with ds 9/10 and ds 7, however, I would not encourage you to combine your 7 and 5 yo in it. I think your 5 yo might be too young for that book and, if you plan to move on to the next guide, Pre...

Re: ?? about extension packages
Hi playschool :D ! I can tell you what I have learned from experience and recent posts. Bigger and Preparing both have schedules for the extension readings in the back of the book. There are no assignments. This link should take you to "Preread Extension Books" which has an awesome explanation by Ca...

Re: A little nervous.....
Hi cdrx4 :D , I don't think you can go wrong with either Bigger or Preparing. I did Bigger last year with a 7 and 9 yo, and I will be doing Preparing this year with an 8 and 10 year old. Probably, your child would enjoy, thrive, and be challenged in either book. Everyone hits these books at slightly...

Re: Ordering Rest of Preparing??
DHT1999, I also have two ds 10 and 7 (eight soon). Like you, we will be doing Preparing as written for one and with extensions with the other. Honestly, I could probably do it as written with both, but I want to make sure I am challenging my older. If there is a book, like you mentioned, that he doe...

Re: Ordering Rest of Preparing??
O.K. I feel like I am eavesdropping here. Are you all saying that the box that says "Independent History Study" is not for the extension student? We treated the extension package for Bigger as an add-on. I thought the extension package in Preparing was also an add-on instead of a substitution....

Re: Preread extension books?
Carrie, Thank you so much for that wonderful description. I wish I had done it that way this year in Bigger. I feel like I dropped the ball on the extensions and wish I could have a redo. :? I like the focus of his interaction with the books rather than having the burden of leading the discussion of...

Re: HOD's History
Jennifer, I can speak for the Bigger guide. The main history readings are taken from two books written at the turn of the century that were editted and republished. They are very easy to read aloud. There is a conversational nature to the style of writing. The First Book in American History is more ...

Re: Any overlapping books?
Thank you!
Your book choices are so wonderful. My mother used to be an elementary librarian and she loves your book packages. She felt they were age appropriate, quality books that would foster a love for reading in any child. Truly awesome!
