Re: Really behind-what can I do over summer?
We are way behind too. My plan is to work through all of May to get to Unit 14 or 15. We'll take June off because my kids are involved in a mission trip, VBS, and other summer activities. I'd like to get another 3 or 4 units done in July, then take another break before starting back up again...

Re: Really behind-what can I do over summer?
I do the opposite. If we are behind I just focus on getting through the guide and leave the basics off. I figure they can catch up in the summer time or on their own time with those. ;-) Mercy Mercy: I never thought of doing that, but it actually makes sense! I am having mine continue with math & e...

Re: DITHOR-tell me why I need it
We have thoroughly enjoyed DITHR - my 2nd grader is doing the level 2/3. She is an avid reader though so there's no way I could discourage her from reading. What DITHR does is helps her think about what she is reading and analyze it a little better. When I was her age I was also a voracious reader....

Re: Really behind-what can I do over summer?
So you are just going to finish Math and LA and then move on to the next guide? Or finish Preparing up in the fall? You don't have to do them in a specific grade level, and I would think finishing would be a better idea. I did do just Math and Reading with my DD last spring after my DS was born. We...

Re: DITHOR-tell me why I need it
Molly,
Thanks, it does help! I keep forgetting that we can tailor things to suit our families.
I do like when character traits & things are discussed, and I'm sure it will probably help to prepare for more in depth literary discussion when they get older.

DITHOR-tell me why I need it
I have very ambivalant feelings towards DITHOR, sorry! It looks great, but I feel like too much "work" that's added to my dc's reading will suck the joy out of it. We do have lots of discussion with our read alouds, and when they are reading on their own, they talk about the plots, but...... Isn't t...

Really behind-what can I do over summer?
I have Preparing, and really want to use it, but we got super sidetracked this year. I am continuing math & LA over the summer, but at a lighter pace. Will that goof things up too much? When I say LA, I am just talking R&S, not the poetry or dictation. I'm freaking out a little at being too behind n...

Re: Starting Preparing without prior narration
Julie:
Thanks for the links on narration-and thanks everyone else for your words of encouragement. I want to be really prepared this time, because I want HOD to work for us, and I want to give it a chance. That's a big problem I have with curriculum.

Re: Starting Preparing without prior narration
Thanks for the feedback, it makes me feel better. Along those same lines, if you have 2 dc using the same program (which I probably will), do you have them do the narration in front of each other? My ds, who is younger, can tell you the entire plot of everything he has ever read, so I don't see a pr...

Starting Preparing without prior narration
My dd is 9, and I wanted to do Preparing with her, but we haven't done much narration in the past (I know, bad mom) other than when we have used WWE. She would get really frustrated and not want to narrate, or act like she didn't know, couldn't remember, etc.... Anyway, we SLOWLY have worked through...

Embarrassed but need help!
I'm embarrased because I have flip flopped so much this year on curriculum and am not quite sure what to do now. We have kept up on our math, reading & LA, and done lots of extra animal/nature things, but history has been the bane of my existance! Not because I dont' like it, but I guess because I'v...

Re: Trying to make Beyond work-going crazy!
I think I was letting my whole public school ideas interfere with what we were doing. And, judging our schedule by other's also. But, I do realize now that I should go by what I truly believe is right, and what God wants for us. I know He doesn't want me to be a stressed out, raving mom & teacher! A...

Bigger for 6 & 8 year old?
I had another post on here (Trying to make Beyond work and going crazy), that basically showed how many extras I was trying to add in, and how it wasn't working. Part of the reason was/is insecurity, but I think I've also figured out another reason. Both of my dc have had a natural interest in anima...

Re: Trying to make Beyond work-going crazy!
All of you ladies who took the time to respond-Thank You! I think I am starting to calm down now. :) I am going to put all my stuff in a pile and weed through it. I know I have too much. I also know that I want them to be relaxed & enjoy school-which is why I picked HOD! I think I'm going to incorpo...

Re: Trying to make Beyond work-going crazy!
What ARE the basics? I'm not sure. I don't want to overwhelm them, but when I look at other programs I feel like I'm not sure what I need. I was thinking about WP LA 2, and it has Wordly Wise 2, Spellwell, Adventures in Phonics 2, Success with Grammar, and their guide, that has more activities. And ...
