Re: Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

Dysgraphia. I've often wondered. So much of his attitude has always screamed "LAZINESS" that the idea of a real learning disability was often tossed aside. We already do his grammar verbally, except diagramming and the occasional R&S worksheet (for portfolio reasons). He hates writing so much that h...

Re: Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

My son will turn 13 in May and will be entering the 8th grade. Skill-wise, he is not a typical 8th grader. His reading level is, perhaps, the only skill that is at or above grade level. He needs significant remedial work in writing and spelling and is even a bit behind in his math (thought math does...

Re: Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

Thank you all for your thoughts! My 14yo used Rev to Rev last year (as a 13yo) and I just "know" that his brother would struggle. I think the Science in Rev to Rev would work (b/c I found EE Physical Science a bit on the "light" side), but we do science with our co-op anyway. He is not a motivated r...

Re: Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

Thanks, Carin. I will check that out but I doubt that he is left-handed. He uses his right hand for pretty much everything from writing to sport but anything is possible.

Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

Hello ladies. :) We are officially returning to HOD next year and I couldn't be happier. Relieved and breathing easier might be a better description. ;) We had a great year doing history with our co-op using another curriculum but I really missed the depth and the quality of HOD book choices. I will...

Re: Another returning HOD'er...

We took the year off from HOD as well. Not b/c we were unhappy with it, not at all. We are part of a co-op (which we love) that chose to do history and science as 2 of its core classes and I just couldn't make HOD work alongside the curriculum our co-op chose for American History. I was sad b/c my o...

Re: Older child in Preparing? Thoughts?

This is good advice. Thank you, Pam. We do daily devotions with our children (my husband creates and leads the devotion). I will encourage him to touch on this subject/topic. I am frustrated and I know that my "training" is not done in the most loving or encouraging way when I am frustrated. I suppo...

Re: Older child in Preparing? Thoughts?

I have 7. These 3 are in the middle. ;) I have a 5, 14, 15 and 17yo besides. They are mostly independent (except the 5yo!). It's my 12yo that struggles the most and the one I am concerned about. My almost 11yo is a challenged reader, but is making great strides. He fits squarely into Preparing with ...

Re: Older child in Preparing? Thoughts?

Thank you for your thoughts (your very detailed and thoughtful thoughts!)! I really do not consider him a rising 8th grader by any sense of the imagination (he is not socially, emotionally or academically a nearly 13yo boy). If he were to go to public school, he would have an IEP and be behind at le...

Older child in Preparing? Thoughts?

Hi everyone. Haven't been on the board in what seems like forever! Hope you are all well and enjoying your HOD year! We were ambushed this year by some significant mental health challenges with my 17yo daughter and so our year has taken a new direction (that is a positive way of putting it, yes? ;) ...

Re: Geography Guide for 8th?

Thanks, Melissa. I could wait a year (2015) and do Geography when the boys are in 12th, 10th and 9th, giving my younger boy another year to mature. However, if my plans work out, they will all do Geography in 2014/15 and then do MFW WHL in 2015/16. The youngest could def. not do MFW WHL for 8th...de...

Geography Guide for 8th?

I'm up late...mapping out our long term plans (though I know they will likely be scrapped b/c things change so quickly around here!). LOL! Next year...*sniff, sniff*.. will be the first year in several years that I will not be using HOD. We are involved in a co-op that will be using another ...

Re: If you've used Preparing, please vote!

I used it with a 9, 11 and 12 yo (with Extensions). It was PERFECT for my 11yo, a bit "light" for my 12yo (even with Extensions) but he isn't the "needs to be challenged" type anyway, lol. It was too much for my 9yo...too much writing, reading, etc. But he has some learning issues (mostly with writi...

Re: MtMM for 10th grade?

Hi Julie! :D We're having a great year. Hope you are, too. I've had to step back from all the boards for a while so I could concentrate on school and staying motivated. It's too easy for me to get distracted. I'm sure I'll be posting more as I'm planning but I'm grateful to know that others a...

Re: MtMM for 10th grade?

Thanks, Melissa! I'm glad your Rev to Rev year is going well! I will be ordering MFW US2 for my dd16 so I will have the components to supplement as necessary. I'm thinking of using Lightning Lit. Late American for Lit. MFW doesn't actually schedule any Lit. for 12th...it's more like a pick and choos...
