Re: Bigger - Science Exploration for Unit 3, Day 5
Just now getting back to ya'll - We're still observing our salt-water plate, but our temps have dropped here in Minnesota and the process is going slowly. We finally noticed tonight that we're seeing more salt around the perimeter. I'm mainly opting for the "variables sometimes effect science experi...

Daughter struggling with narration
I'm not sure what to think. DD is almost 10 and is struggling with narration. I narrowed her requirement down to one small paragraph and she still struggled. I narrowed it down to one sentence and she still struggled. Up until today I've had to give her lots of prompts, ask questions, etc. to keep h...

Bigger - Science Exploration for Unit 3, Day 5
I can only assume that one of my paper plates was faulty. We set up the experiment last night and this morning the plate with fresh water was completely empty. It appears to have soaked into the plate (and the cloth under the plate). The paper plate with salt water has not absorbed any of the water....

Re: Unit 2 - our art didn't work, help!
Thanks! Yep, after I wrote the post the same thought came to me. My dh and I were discussing the fact that wax paper is not as thick as it used to be and probably has less wax on it nowadays. Many paper products are much different than they used to be. We purchased index cards for Bigger and they ar...

Unit 2 - our art didn't work, help!
We did the Unit 2 art project where we traced a fish onto a layer of wax paper that transferred to art paper. We tried both sides of the waxpaper and one finished painting is only slightly better than the other. Neither show a definite shape of a fish. Do you think it's our cheap wax paper? We made ...

First Day of Bigger and all smiles!
Half-way through our first day of HOD my dd picked up the book and gave it a big hug. (Yes, I took a picture :D ) And this was before we got to "the fun side" of the page. She did start getting tired by the end of the day. But then we've never been able to cover so much in one day before - and since...

Re: Mom & Dad both homeschooling....
I think it's already been said, but I could have written your post! I started back to work this past October after 11 years at home. I came out of the school year feeling sooo stressed. I'm giving myself a few weeks to just "be" before tweaking our homeschool to function more efficiently in the Fall...

New to HOD and so excited!
I received BHFHG last week and just ordered the rest of the pieces last night (except for the readers - I work in a library so I'll get our lit. from there). I am so excited about this program! I looked at it last year but was afraid to jump in - I was concerned that I'd feel "tied down" as I've bee...

Re: DITHOR -Sorry for being a pest, but....
:D Well, this makes me smile! Over the past couple days I've been reading replies and thinking on it some more and decided to just order BHFHG for now and see if the latter part of the Emerging Reader program would be the best place to start. I figured I could always order DITHOR later. I just logge...

DITHOR -Sorry for being a pest, but....
I am concerned that I am not going to have enough time to implement BHFHG and DITHOR. Between having a precious dd who processes information slowly and my work schedule, I have to be realistic about how much we can get done in a day. Both my dc and myself need some "down" time in the afternoon befor...

DITHOR and CM method
I am choosing HOD because it seems, to me, that it lends itself somewhat to the CM method. I am just wondering how/if DITHOR fits the CM method. Since CM essentially uses narration for literature (really, for just about every subject), it almost seems to me that DITHOR would not be needed if one is ...

DITHOR - How much time each day?
I know that a lot depends on the child, but in general, how much time do you take to cover DITHOR? Is it scheduled 5 days per week or is there room for flexibility with scheduling (without falling behind)? My concern stems from the fact that my daughter is a "pokey little puppy" so to speak. :) If D...

Learning States, Capitals and Presidents
Hi - I will be using Bigger Hearts For His Glory with my 9 yo dd this Fall. As of yet, we've not worked on memorization of the typical social studies lists: states, capitals, and presidents. Is this an area that BHFHG covers or or does Carrie make suggestions/recommendations about this type of memor...

Re: Is Beyond the right choice for us?
Oh my. I just wrote a lengthy response to all of you and hit the wrong button and lost it. Sigh. This will be an abbreviated version. First, thank you to all who have responded. I really appreciate your thoughts. :D Thank you, Alison, for helping me to see that if it feels "right" to use Beyond then...
