Forgive me and maybe see you later!
To all the wonderful ladies on this board, Please forgive me for asking for placement help and using your precious time. It looks like yet again we won't be using HOD afterall. I had a chat with the principal (dh!) and he really wants us to use programs that allow us to keep all of our children toge...

Time to stop talking, and start doing!
Okay, just for fun I was reading through all my old posts from the last couple of years, and I'm so embarassed! I've run so many placement scenarios past y'all, and have yet to actually complete an HOD program. One good thing about time slipping by, however: my dc are getting older and don't ...

Re: If you do standardized tests for your own information . . .
My oldest is 9 and in 3rd grade too, and we've never done testing. We are in Florida, and I found released copies of the FCAT online, so I am planning on using that this year. It won't be official or anything; I'll just see how she does on it. We use the portfolio option for yearly evaluations; ther...

Re: One child always needing extentions vs. using more guides
Thanks, Patty. I think option #2 is my favorite one too. You are right- my oldest is ready to "spread her wings and fly" (though if I ask her, she says she wants to stay all combined and just let me read everything aloud to all of them. I just keep getting the feeling that Preparing would be so good...

One child always needing extentions vs. using more guides
I've been considering several placement options for my dc for the next school year (to be honest, I haven't decided if we will use HOD; right now the plan is to keep them combined for history/science using MOH and Apologia Botany. If finanaces permit, I would love to use HOD instead, but I'm looking...

Re: Box Day! (I think)
I hope it arrives today! But I know that sometimes packages go through the sort facility one day, and then arrive at your local PO the next day to go out for delivery. I guess it depends on how busy your sort facility is and what their schedule is. You never know though!

Re: Can children work independently?
I'm interested in seeing more replies to this question. I too have 6 children. My oldest just turned 9, and I'm considering letting her work independently in either Bigger or Preparing next school year (she'll be in 4th). Of course I'd still have to work with the other children, but at least the old...

Re: Question about Children's Grade Level
We decided a long time ago to go by what grade they would be in if they were in public school, regardless of what they are actually doing (as far as what to answer when people ask what grade they are in). That ensures they are with children of the same age in Sunday School and other activities. So, ...

Who combines children beyond the recommended ages?
I have felt drawn to HOD for a few years now, and even tried it for a while, but my main problem is that I like to keep my children combined for content subjects. Is there anyone here who combines beyond the recommended ages and just lets youngers tag-along? We have math and LA that we like, so we'd...

Re: 3rd grader doing the reading in Bigger themselves?
Thanks Jessica! My dd read a few pages of A 1st Book of American History to me the other day, and she did very well. She needs help with names of people and places sometimes, but other than that she's fine. I showed her how there are definitions of difficult words at the end of the chapter. She real...

Re: 3rd grader doing the reading in Bigger themselves?
My son couldn't do it. He is reading well now but he wouldn't be able to sort out the directions for all the notebooking. I am sure he could read the books himself but the writing would be too much for him to sort out on his own. Sometimes they have to look up particular portions of text in a book ...

3rd grader doing the reading in Bigger themselves?
I thought I was all about keeping everyone combined for a time of family learning, but it's been chaotic trying to accomplish that lately, so I'm rethinking all that! I'm already doing Little Hearts with my K'er (with the older siblings tagging along for fun for the readings). I'm thinking that my r...

Re: R&S English question
We do test...but I don't allow my son to "study" before it. I use it purely to make sure he is actually learning the material as he has a near photographic short-term memory and he fools me easily unless I do it this way. That sounds kind of like my 6yo. I'm planning on using the tests with him too...
