Dictation question

I will be doing Preparing with my 10 y/o son next year. I have been looking at the guide and have a question about dictation. Do I start with Level 2 since he hasn't had any practice with studied dictation. Those look pretty easy for him, but it might be a good thing to start out easy since it will ...

Re: Favorite American History Read Alouds

Carrie the read alouds will be mainly for my son. My 14 y/o dd may listen in some, but she is in 9th grade Honors English next year at ps and will have extensive summer reading to do so my guess is she will do that when he and I are reading aloud. I really think with the right type of books my ds wi...

Re: Favorite American History Read Alouds

Carrie, Thanks again for responding. At this point my son isn't an avid reader, he has to read 30 minutes a night for his homework in ps and he counts off the minutes. My prayer is that hsing with Preparing will change that in him. He does love when we do read-alouds though. I looked at the text of ...

Favorite American History Read Alouds

My ds who will be 10 and in the 5th grade is going to do Preparing next year. He has had some American History in his ps, but not a lot. I am taking the suggestion of those here on the board and doing read-alouds this summer that cover American History so at least I will feel like he has gotten some...

Re: History encyclopedia for Preparing

I also tend to pick a few sites for them to look on to find their information on the internet. My dc have been in ps up to this point and I haven't built up my home reference library like I should. I am going to get the Usborne Ancients book and then I am looking to add a few others to it. My dd is ...

History encyclopedia for Preparing

I noticed for the Research portion that a History Encyclopedia is recommended. Is there a certain one that people use and like? I know he can look stuff up on the internet, but I also think we need a good history encyclopedia also since we don't have anything like that. Thanks, Lynn

Re: Another question about the amount of writing in Preparing

Carrie, Thanks once again for answering my questions. As I poured over the guide last night I also figured I could be his scribe on several sections such as the Science and Poetry. I like the idea that he will have a goal of writing one thing in cursive a day. That way he knows exactly what is expec...

Another question about the amount of writing in Preparing

I now have the guide in hand so I have a few more questions. My ds is the one with mild Cerebral Palsy. He can write short sentences, but tires easily and has difficulty with legibility. He can do some cursive and prefers it because his hand tremor isn't as much of a factor since you don't lift your...

Re: Question about 4 day schedule

Thank you so much for all your answers. You have given me lots of ideas. I also volunteer a few hours a week at our local animal shelter taking all the pictures for petfinder and my son loves to go with me. I didn't even think about the fact that the 4 day schedule will make me less concerned about ...

Re: Want to do HOD, but have a few concerns

Carrie, Thanks so much for responding. I did take a closer look at the placement chart and he does fit squarely into Preparing. I borrowed my neighbors R & S 4 book and he could do it, but I am still not sure if it is right for him or not. I have also considered Growing with Grammar. The only thing ...

Question about 4 day schedule

I just now realized that the schedule for Preparing only covers 4 days. Do you only school 4 days? If not what do you do on the 5th day. I will be in a co-op, but that does take breaks during the year and I am not really comfortable with not schooling 5 days especially since Ohio requires 900 hours ...

Re: Want to do HOD, but have a few concerns

I have looked at Bigger, but I think even with beefing it up it might be too easy for him. I also want to be able to do as much of the Hearts through time cycle as I can. As it is I will fall one year short if I do Preparing next year. One more just general question. Right now reading is not his fav...

Re: Want to do HOD, but have a few concerns

Thank you so much for your replys. Our laws don't require US history at a certain grade either, just that it is covered. The problem is they have done a little in school, but not a lot. They are studying the history of Ohio now so he gets some, but it is limited. He hasn't always tested the best, bu...

Want to do HOD, but have a few concerns

I am going to homeschool my ds for the first time next year. He will be 10 and in the 5th grade. I posted once before about him. He has mild Cerebral Palsy that affects his hands and therefore his writing abilities. He does type, but still needs work on improving his speed with that. I really want t...

Re: Question about DITHOR

Thank you Carrie for your reply. I am fine with him dictating to me his answers so I think I would use the 4/5 book. He is capable of thinking at that level its just when he has to focus on the mechanics of writing it gets in the way of him putting down complete answers. The goals of the program sou...
