Re: Strayed from HOD for 1 year and don't know how to get ba

Thank you everyone for the replies! I was pleasantly surprised to hear that repeating material would be just fine. My boys have enjoyed reading about this most recent period of history, so I'm sure they wouldn't mind staying with it and going a bit deeper!

Strayed from HOD for 1 year and don't know how to get back!

We had used HOD exclusively from the start and loved it. Then in RTR, my boys LOVED the Mystery of History (volume 3) text that Carried used in the 2nd half of that year. They enjoyed it so much that they talked me into using that as our History text this year. I've used the Science and some other r...

Re: RtoR Encouragement needed :)

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement! Some of the suggestions I read here tonight were some things I had been considering, so these posts just reinforced what I was thinking of doing! I found the Shakespeare on Librivox, so I will have them listen and follow along in their book. We tal...

RtoR Encouragement needed :)

Well, it's 4:20, and we just finished our day of school. My 10 and 11 year old boys are in Res to Ref this year. My question is this: Do any of your moms still read the History, Science, and Shakespeare aloud? They tried reading on their own last year but gave up when they weren't understanding Zool...

Re: English placement for 10 and 11 yo

OK, that was helpful; thanks! I need to get everything ordered so I can start looking through it and planning for fall! I feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of the medieval writing lessons, but we will give it our best shot :)

English placement for 10 and 11 yo

We have always used HOD and are gearing up for RtR this year! However, I have never used the English recommended by HOD but may want to this year. Is it too late to jump into Rod and Staff English? My boys will be 10 (5th grade) and 11 (6th grade) at the start of this school year. We've never diagra...

do Bigger (with ext. pack) at half speed??

Hi! My boys are 7 and 6 and we are finishing up Beyond this spring. They both enjoy History the most and dislike copywork (esp. the youngest), which I'm thinking may be because he's a little young and his fine motor skills aren't fully developed yet (?) SO, would it be appropriate to do Bigger at ha...

Last week of LHFHG - loved the math today!

Hi! I'm so excited to report that we are on our final week of LHFHG. I'm proud of myself for staying on task all year and proud of my boys (6 and 5) for doing their best all year long! I just wanted to say that we loved today's (unit 34, day 1) math activity. The boys enjoyed counting out/paying the...

should we do Beyond at half-speed?

My boys (6 and 5) are finishing LHFHG; we completed it all this school year. We're excited to start Beyond in the fall. I'm wondering if we should plan to go at half-speed (technically, my 5 yo would just be in kindergarten this fall, if he were going to public school). They kept up fine in LHFHG, b...

Re: should LHFHG just take an hour a day?

Ahhh, thank you both for your encouragement. Sometimes I question myself and feel alone, so this was the right place to come! Nancy, I see that your 5 yo is in BHFHG - how is that going? It's not too much for a 5 yo? The only reason I ask is that next year my boys will still be 5 and 6 when we start...

should LHFHG just take an hour a day?

Hi - My boys (6 and 5) are doing LHFHG this year and really enjoying it. It only takes us 60-90 minutes to complete all the activities. Is that what the rest of you have found? I guess that since this is my first year of homeschooling and my oldest son would be in kindergarten all day otherwise, I m...

Re: should my boys (6 and 5) continue together next year?

Thank you both for your encouragement and input. I think we'll just keep going along as we are, then if we need to start half-speed next year with Bigger, then that's what we'll do.

should my boys (6 and 5) continue together next year?

Hi - I know there have been a lot of questions about combining, but I haven't found my exact situation, so I thought I'd ask... My boys turned 6 and 5 this past fall, and we're doing LHFHG this year. It is going well; they both seem engaged and are "getting a lot out of it". My youngest isn't doing ...

Re: keeping kids together but one's not quite ready

Thanks, Nancy, that's a good idea. I could stretch LHFHG out over 2 years, supplementing along the way. I'm so new to this, and it's really hard for me to get away from the public school mentality of "what grade is everyone in" and doing exactly one year's curriculum between September and May. But b...
