I think kids at that age can handle a little more "challenging content" in their reading, however, I totally understand what you are saying as well.
As a parent I would prefer the books be related to the history period, however, if there simply was not one available for a certain section I think ...

I'm still not sure what to do after reading all the other threads.

Now that I look at the actual thickness of Bigger I think that after adding extra pages of my own things a binder might just get too big and cumbersome.

Maybe leaving the book as is but tabbing it somehow and then having a binder ...

This is the one thing I wished the guide had. I like to see the "big picture" for the week and month so I can plan accordingly. It's especially helpful when I feel I'm behind because of vacation or a trip-it helps me see what we need to do to get back on track.

The only reason I had to pick a name was for Scholastic book orders I picked "Creekside School" because it's our address and we really do live by a creek.

I'm not talking about DITHOR but rather the Rod and Staff or Language Lessons. If you don't use these because you were already using something else or these just didn't work for you-what do you use?

Does it work fine with the HOD program you're using?

It's a CM method, with the ' less is more' mentality...meaning fewer books, smaller amounts of time reading them, and more time to savor them and ponder...hence actually getting MORE out of the study! I feel so relaxed about our up-coming year....I don't have to worry about 10's of books sitting in ...

Let me try to explain this so it doesn't sound silly...
I have all the Bigger books for the year in a tidy basket-it looks so lovely and inviting and DOABLE! This is for ALL subjects mind you ;)

Then I look at the program I was going to use and the 2 baskets of books that were just for the history ...

If you do Beyond you could use some of the read-a-louds as independent readers for your older one. This was the advice I got.

Good question. I do think I'll continue using what we have. They are solid programs and go through 6th grade.
And most importantly, my son actually tolerates them
