Re: OT (sort of) Need writing ideas
I don't have a lot of advice, but I was thinking that she needs a surface that is more resistant until she gets this under control. Could she use a dry erase board and marker to write her assignments. If you want a copy of it to keep for records, take pictures of it each time.

Re: Selecting Program Level
I just wanted to quickly reply, reading your description, and Carrie's suggestions....I think Preparing would be a GREAT happy medium. I think you would find CtC very much in rigor like the curriculum you are currently using and would burn your son out. My two boys (just 9 and almost 11) are doing P...

Re: For those supplementing with Explode the Code...
We did the same as the PP. However, I will say though, that I didn't have the teachers manual, and I didn't emphasize the rules or review them as much as I'm assuming the manual would have you do. Therefore I felt like we didn't maximize the program as you could. In 2nd grade we switched to Abeka's ...

Re: A little OT: Phonics and emotional breakdowns
Just wanted to 2nd what others were saying about waiting. I too had a very ambitious and smart 5 year old that I was teaching to read. We did Reading Made Easy. We got a month or two into it, as it was getting harder, and he would have very similar breakdowns. At one point he was saying things like,...

Re: EASING my daughter into writing more
I do agree that a 10 year old should be able to write more than 2-3 sentences. However, I think Preparing is a perfect guide to help her slowly build up this skill. I would simply make sure you are ULTRA consistent in what is required of her. If she's been able to dictate to YOU the amount of writin...

Re: 3 guides! Help!
Perhaps before you combine them you should take that time you have with your daughter while everyone else is asleep and use it doing more teacher intensive subjects (grammar, or reading about History, or storytime) with her vs. doing the boxes that can really be done semi-independently, if not compl...

Re: Confessions of a hovering momma
Oh Lynn! What a gem you are! As a mom with a son who also has mild CP I can totally relate! He struggles with the desire to be completely independent, yet ends frustrated when his efforts result in a less than perfect design than his mind imagined. Thank you for sharing your heart and testimony here...

Re: Finally figured out why ds balks at HOD. Help?
that's a great analogy Kathleen! I love it! I often find that it IS in the way we approach it with our children that helps them see things the way they say them. At first I was thinking...why not just do 2-3 pages at a time in a few boxes to go deeper in those areas like he's wanting, then the next ...

So glad it's going well for you! I too did this guide with my 7 year old and 5 year old! It was such a wonderful guide. My faith grew exponentially actually thru this guide! I hope your year is as special for you as it was for me! Enjoy this age...it goes quickly!

Re: History in Bigger is draaaaging...
I'm going to be perfectly honest here, and I hope Carrie certainly doesn't take this the wrong way, but we too found the history in Bigger to be boring. We are doing Preparing right now and it is OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD! But I understand, like you said, not everything is always going to be what our c...

Re: Emergent Readers- getting more difficult
I'm assuming you are homeschooling this other woman's daughter? I would certainly hope it wouldn't cause friction in your relationship, since you are her teacher and are the one actually with her each day, if you needed to slow her down and cement in her phonics facts. I would definitely not be too ...

Re: Confused :-( yet again...pls help!
I have a 9 year old that could have very easily done Bigger and would have suited him just fine. However, I also know he is capable of Preparing. Since his brother was going to do Preparing I decided to combine them. I do have to coach my 9 year old a bit more on things that my 10 year old does easi...

Re: Curious about jumping a guide...
Thanks Lynn! I really value your opinion. I LOVE the prophesy portion in CtC and I too would hate for him to miss that. I think you're right...for now we'll just keep on keeping on and cross the HS bridge a bit further down the road. Still have 3 more years ahead till we get there!
