Re: Would you say HOD is more of a CM approach or unit study
I would say it's more CM--includes a history cycle (although a bit different), living books, later grammar, dictation, narrations (first oral moving to written later), Shakespeare study, poetry study, nature study, art, hymn study. All of the beloved CM ideas are there, just maybe not everything eve...

Re: Placement help: Bigger or Preparing for special needs
My son is 11 and is using Bigger. It's actually perfect for him--not too easy at all. He is a very smart little guy, but struggles with dysgraphia, dyslexia, poor working memory, low processing speed. Bigger allows us to have some great conversations without the writing being too heavy. It's been en...

Re: Extension Package for Beyond?
Beyond and under don't have extension packages. Bigger is the first guide with an extension package. I double checked the main page and the placement chart, and I didn't see extensions mentioned for Beyond. Speaking of the placement chart, have you checked there for your kids yet? Here's the link. h...

Re: Can I use Bigger for ten year old?
In that case, I would definitely use the extensions for her if you go with Bigger. It might work fine, but I could see the science potentially not being enough. One question I would have is what you were wanting to use after Bigger. If you want to jump to CTC, then that might feel like a big jump fo...

Re: Strayed from HOD for 1 year and don't know how to get ba
We read through Mystery of History 4 last year to prepare for the national history bee regionals, and we are doing MTMM after taking a couple years off of HOD, and my daughter so far (we're only a couple days in, so I realize we don't have a big picture experience yet) isn't complaining at all about...

Re: Can I use Bigger for ten year old?
I'm using Bigger for my son who has just turned 11. He is doing fine, and it is plenty challenging. We started out doing the extension books with him but soon gave it up. The work in Bigger was plenty. As long as he is placed well on the placement chart, it should be enough for him. This is my 2nd r...

Re: Placement help please? Returning to HOD
Just wanted to mention that this option is working perfectly for us! We went with MTMM and are doing it half paced right now. We are doing a mix of the science from the previous guide and the science in this one at my daughter's request. We've started out half speed, and it's perfect! We're wanting ...

Re: 2016-2017 Catalog
I can't wait to see the next catalog! I always end up giving mine out to people who are interested in HOD and it's always well-received. I love, love, love that HOD still does paper catalogs. I just think SOOO much better when holding something in my hand.

Re: Need help to schedule HS Guides
I'm not in the high school guides yet, (but we will be starting WG in the 2018-2019 school year!) but I would probably try to finish the whole guide if possible. Could you school year round? Or do the guide 5 days/week instead of 4? I know they're very full, so that might not be possible. I would tr...

Re: Placement help please? Returning to HOD
Oh Carrie this helps so much!! I will talk to my daughter and see which option she prefers. As I think I mentioned before, we will be using these guides with all of our other kiddos, so I certainly don't mind buying another guide. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind that I could only do half a g...

Re: Placement help please? Returning to HOD
We actually school year round, so that's not a problem. (She has ADHD and does much better with a clear routine) She's only been with AO this year because... well long, long story. Before that she did Veritas Press self paced (the last two ones which cover exploration-modern times between them), and...

Re: Placement help please? Returning to HOD
After reading through samples, I'm almost wondering if we should do Rev2Rev light (maybe just the economy package?) starting when we finish up AO which should be the end of March/early April and working 5 days/week instead of the 4 that's scheduled. She would still feel like she's getting a bit of a...

Re: Need help placing and combining 6 kids close in age.
What a neat situation you're in with the language learning! I wish we had an option like that (only with Spanish) with my kids. From what you've said about your kids, I would do either Bigger or Preparing for your oldest. Preparing is a huge step up in work, including being able to work independentl...

Re: Placement help please? Returning to HOD
Thanks, Carrie, for the help! My daughter would be in 7th grade right now if she were in public school because her birthday is right after the cut off for school. I always hate giving a grade level to her because it feels confusing to me. lol We started her in Kinder (with LHFHG!) the fall she turne...
