Re: Pausing other subjects while teaching reading?

What a blessing it was to read your experience with exactly what we're struggling with. Your son sounds like he is in the same spot as my son with reading ability. The titles you mentioned might work well for my ds6 (7 in June). I do notice that he enjoys reading other readers if he can. I should lo...

Re: Pausing other subjects while teaching reading?

Thank you so much to everyone who replied. I think it is best to continue on. I didn't really think there was a problem with what we were doing, just that he is LEARNING to read and it's hard. But when the ladies of my group said I was doing too much........ Yes, I agree I should have phonics earlie...

Pausing other subjects while teaching reading?

Hello Fellow HODies! :) Last night at my homeschool support group I was seeking ideas about teaching my oldest to read. He is a wiggly 6 year old. We're doing The Reading Lesson and it seems to be going fine, albeit slow, except he complains about doing school and especially reading, saying it is ha...

Re: State Requirement -- social studies (& health)

I'm amazed that I found the exact topic I searched for! :D :D but I didn't find my question answered. I too am in WI (HI JOY!) and have noticed on the state form that history is not included but social studies is. I read the link provided and while it did provide an overall comparison of the two cat...

The Reading Lesson: consumable?

Hi, I just started The Reading Lesson with my ds6 and was surprised to see there are workbook pages within. I guess that means it's consumable and I will have to buy a new book for every child? What about when I teach two at a time? Will they each need their own book? How have others dealt with this...

Re: LHTH for Kindergarten

I just wanted to add that I used LHTH for my ds5 for Kindergarten and we did not add anything. Just the LHTH as written. It was plenty. He is active and busy and slow with fine motor skills and it was our first year homeschooling, so it was right on target for us at his age. We're moving right into ...

Re: Please explain about John Calvin and calvanism

I am doing Little hands and we just covered Calvin[along with Augustine,Luther....]I have not found any slant to HOD.I am enjoying learning along with him.Yes some of Calvin - I diasagree with and I did some of my own research after we covered it in HOD but I think the message that HOD covered was ...

Re: I don't see many

We're almost done! This was our first HOD program and it was a very good fit. I started last summer with ds 5 as kindergarten and will finish up in just about 5 weeks (longer than it seems). Then after a 3 week spring break and travel vacation, we're jumping right into LHFHG. Can hardly wait for the...

Re: Singapore Math Question...

Carrie, As always, thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions. My hubby and I have been able to make a good decision for our family and can rest this topic. I'm sorry you have more work to do to make the guide gel with the math connection. What a hassle. Thank you for your commitment t...

Re: Singapore Math Question...

Yes, that does help. Thank you. Could you not use just the Standards B book for Kindergarten? Since it sounds to me like the preschool material is somehow included. I really don't know the break down between A and B. Are you having to rewrite the coordinating activities in the guide? I'm sure you'll...

Re: Singapore Math Question...

it looks like the new standards edition combines earlybird 1a/1b and 2a/2b thus the larger size, (plus more practice sheets.) I could use the preschool part for my younger students if they come to like workbooks. I think 2a/b is a better fit for my K ds (the second part of the book, if i understand ...

Re: Singapore Math Question...

I'm stumped on what to do about this..... I am getting ready to buy LHFHG within a few months (starting in May) with the K level books for my oldest. I've got several little ones up and coming (3 so far) with whom I plan to use this curriculum. So what is the best route? Order the guide now with 4 s...

Re: Ready for copywork?

Carrie, Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me personally. Your explanation and direction to my copywork question encouraged me greatly and gave me relief to know which book to choose. I trust your experienced judgment and will use the "K" book with wiggly ds. :D I did not know LHFHG...

Ready for copywork?

How do I know is my ds5 is ready for copywork in LHFHG? We're doing LHTH right now as well as Teach your child to read in 100 Easy Lessons. He can do the reading lessons, painstakingly, slowly sounding out the words, but he can do it, and he's getting better. We're doing the writing letters section ...
