Re: How do I fix this???
Hello Joyful Heart, I know just how you feel, but I want to encourage you that things DO get better. My 14yodd is dyslexic and has dysgraphia. I often wondered if she would ever learn to read, write or spell. Things DO come slowly and LOTS of patience is needed! But fear not, children like ours do le...

Re: Hurricane Heading Our Way
Fellow Floridians and other friends, I am praying our State will not be hit too hard! We are in Pasco County and thankfully I have city water so we dont lose it when the power goes out! I live right in city limits, but am still considered rural. Sometimes these storms can be fun. No electricity mean...

What to say?
Well, I can totally sympathize with you! After 10 years and four kids never going to school, our families eventually stopped asking us when we were going to put those kids in school! Some of it was genuine concern for the kids, most of it was that homeschooling is NOT the normal way of life for most...

MFW or HOD
Hello Mom25, Welcome! I used MFW for three years and enjoyed it.We have used Adventures, ECC and CTG. One reason I switched over to HOD was the book list. It presents history on a more personal level, using real people to tell the history. I am speaking of BIGGER HEARTS which I am using right now. A...

Math problems
Hi Martha, My dd is the same way with Math. One thing that helped her do written problems was graph paper.Everything was able to be lined up so she did not get confused. I started out with pretty wide blocks and now she can do her problems in standard size paper. It was very helpful. Again, taking i...

what to choose
I think you answered your own question: "I want him to be challenged, but not frustrated." It is so disheartening when you buy a curriculum and realize it is not going to work out. There seems to be a good deal of writing in Bigger. If he struggles with writing(as most boys do!) then you should get ...

Our First Day using Bigger
Hello ladies! Well, what a nice morning Anna and I had doing school! She loves to do school anytime, anywhere! I am so pleased with BHFHG! My dd enjoyed the Science so much that we actually did the next day too, just so she could draw the pictures of the low/high tide in her new science journal note...

Why I chose HOD
Debbie, I used MFW for three years. We enjoyed ECC, Adventures and Creation to Greeks. What brought me to HOD were the books chosen to teach with. I enjoyed MFW very much, but I liked the approach of learning history through the people who were part of it rather than just the facts. Another reason I ...

curious
Hello.
I would be curious how to do a weeks work in 4 days. Our Friday co-op will be starting back up in August and I was wondering how I will be able to double up on Thursdays.
It was easy to do with MFW but since I am new to HOD, I am very curious!!
Looking forward to hearing some advice,
Ruth

OT: Texas
Remember I mentioned possibly moving to Texas? Well, my husband is considering a job in Houston. Does anyone know of any groups in Houston or Houston area? I am still homeschooling three of my five kids, ages 17,13 and 10. I heard Texas is a very homeschool friendly state....are my sources correct? T...

paraphrasing
Carrie is right about paraphrasing. I did not mean to suggest you do it often, just when the child really isnt getting it! I had that problem when I first starting reading better literature to my kids...I was answering it for them. So much of the brain work is done for our kids in books today with p...

schedule
We start in August, take two weeks off in November because mother in law comes for a Thanksgiving visit. We take the week of Christmas off, then do not take anymore time off in large chunks again. We take days off here and there, sick days, nice days in the winter days....it is SO hard to do school ...

8th grader
hi Terri! I am going to use BIGGER for the spine of my 8th grader's studies this year. She will read all the extension pack history books and the two hardback books. You can do a websearch on other "literature based curriculums" and get more book lists for more reading material if you would like. My...

History core books
Ladies, It is so frustrating when you are reading a book to the kids and you have to keep stopping to explain what you just read! What I have done in the past is this: read the chapter or chapters ahead of time and grasp the meaning of it yourself first. Explaining it comes easier if you prepared. D...
